Wizz Air - do they really measure bags

Amazonmulu · 14/05/2024 20:06

I've bought tickets for Wizz Air without hold luggage and wondering if I can take a suit case that's marginally taller than the max. The cabin free allowance is 40 x 30 x 20 and my suitcase is 46 x 30 x 20 🙈🙈 Asking in case anyone has flown with them recently?

I wouldn’t risk it - they can be pretty strict

Ereyraa · 14/05/2024 20:22

Yes, all the budget airlines are strict these days.

EatPrayEat · 14/05/2024 20:22

I flew with EasyJet recently and they were measuring bags. There were people kicking off about being charged extra and they had to get security. I wouldn’t risk it!

60andsomething · 14/05/2024 20:23

you will get a massive fine for that. And/or they wont take it

TheChosenTwo · 14/05/2024 20:24

We flew with them last summer and yes they were measuring bags. Only 2 of my lot had small rucksacks and they were fine but many others were not.
However I do wonder about all of this as sometimes I’ve flown with an airline and they’ve been really strict and on the way back no one has batted an eyelid. Maybe it depends on how many people are travelling, I don’t know but I never risk it and just check luggage into the hold and go as hands free as possible on the flight.

StripedTomatoes · 14/05/2024 20:25

Yes they will and you've no chance of getting that on, 6cm is loads in baggage terms!

SuuzeeeQ · 14/05/2024 20:26

The budget airlines are usually strict as it’s a good way to make £££ quickly. If it doesn’t fit in their measuring thing, you will probably have to pay!

FASDE1517 · 14/05/2024 20:35

I got away with similar a couple of years ago.

Cattenberg · 14/05/2024 20:38

I don’t know about Whizzair, but I flew with easyJet last year. One of my relatives decided to risk taking a cabin bag that was slightly too big. When we arrived at the boarding gate, a member of staff immediately spotted my relative’s bag and asked her to put it in the metal gauge. It wouldn’t quite go in, so she had to put it in the hold and pay a large extra fee.

I wouldn’t risk it, especially as the staff were clearly looking out for any oversized cabin baggage. It doesn’t cost them anything to check the size of a few bags, but if they do spot an oversized one, that’s a nice bit of extra money for the airline.

Nonewclothes2024 · 14/05/2024 20:41

Yes. Had to pay £60 each way once. My mistake.

Amx · 14/05/2024 21:18

It's a big income stream for them charging for extra baggage so yes, likely they'll message it.

Amx · 14/05/2024 21:19

Measure

I went with them on way to Poland and they didn't even look. Def didn't put it in that box to measure 🤷🏻

Paninaro94 · 14/05/2024 21:25

What’s the charge to put the bag in the hold at check-in (rather than if you have pre-paid)? That would swing it for me. If it’s £20 then fine but I have heard of £120 for some budget airlines.

What sort of bag did you have ? Most of the low cost carriers are fierce with hard, wheeled cases . Remember that the gate staff are seeing thousands of carry on bags every day and know exactly what they are looking for. I'm pretty sure they will recognise every bag type and know whether or not they fit the criteria.
i always take a soft bag and have never had it even glanced at despite having taken it bursting at the seams although i always fly easyJet as I go from Gatwick.

ive got so used to flying EJ hand luggage only, on which I can easily manage a week, that my upcoming long haul flight allowance with Tui seems a grossly excessive luxury 😂

Proudbitch · 14/05/2024 23:25

When I flew with them last year they didn’t check as I left the UK, but they did on the way back and made us pay to check them in

Edited

Yea I did have a soft bag, squeezed it to the brim and squished it together 🤣

Ormally · 15/05/2024 22:10

Yes - it's a metal gauge that you have to slide your bag into so it shows if any edge of it sticks out.

murasaki · 15/05/2024 22:29

I flew with them in February. They didn't measure my rucksack, but two people ahead of me in the queue with hard cases were checked and failed. Off to the desk to pay for them.

EnglishBluebell · 15/05/2024 23:08

I work in aviation- they need to be. Especially with the smaller aircraft. If a bag doesn't funny fit in the overhead compartments and the door flies open mid-flight, the bag will come flying out and will likely hit somebody. I believe someone was killed by a small suitcase in this scenario in the US once during turbulence. That door on the overhead compartment must be able to close. Otherwise that bag will need to be checked into the cabin baggage and you'll then be hit with a charge for doing so.

It's nothing at all to do with money, I promise you. It is safety. People shove those bags in the overhead compartments, force the doors closed until they click and then the cabin pressure mid flight causes them to burst open and then passengers get a rock hard mini suitcase flying at force into their head!!!💥
