Cheap break in Europe in August

MrsTerryPratchett · 12/05/2024 18:02

TIA for any advice. We thought about Bruges. Edinburgh is out because the festival makes everything too expensive. Belfast?

Not Paris, Prague (been), Italy (really, anywhere too hot in August) too expensive or crap. We like cities, food, culture, more food. Flying or train is fine, not driving. Could be the UK but somewhere like Cornwall is busy in August.

I'm struggling.

Honestly nowhere is cheap in august. First week of September is normally so much cheaper and quieter. Obviously no good if you have school age kids

fungipie · 12/05/2024 18:04

Ljubljana (even though I can never spell it)

Fenimore · 12/05/2024 18:04

I doubt there will be much cheap in August.

Amsterdam? Berlin? To try and avoid Med heat, I’d suggest a Scandi place we but it’s expensive. Tbh we’re trying to think of the same thing!

ghislaine · 12/05/2024 18:04

Copenhagen (too expensive?)
Helsinki
Berlin
Porto/Coimbra/Lisbon
Budapest

MrsTerryPratchett · 12/05/2024 18:07

'Cheap' may have been overstating it. Cheaper than Edinburgh during the festival!

Ljubljana and Berlin are good ideas!

Definitely second Ljubljana and Berlin

Warsaw has some great food (I hadn’t expected it to be so good)
Krakow
Tallinn
Zagreb
Jersey - again hadn’t expected such good food
Gothenburg
Porto
Bilbao - make sure to avoid Aste Nagusia week if you don’t like crowds

LadyLazlo · 12/05/2024 19:03

We looked at belguim first week August. Accommodation v expensive. There are cheap flights though, to weird places...dusseldorf etc, but the accommodation costs tipped it the wrong way for us.

Georgyporky · 12/05/2024 19:06

Tallinn will not be too hot, & it's interesting
We were told it never gets above 60 - but I think they meant F & not C

CarrotSpa · 12/05/2024 19:07

Belfast? I spent a couple of days there earlier this year. Fab city, loads to do, cheap flights.

justalitteon · 12/05/2024 19:09

Budget, no of people, amount of time as well as airports you can fly from.

BluebirdBoogie · 12/05/2024 19:18

Curve ball here - Norwich? I really enjoyed it. Lots of history, great pubs and restaurants. You can take a train to the Norfolk Broads and hire a boat for the day. Or head to Cromer or Sheringham on the coast. Great place for a mini break.

GrumpyPanda · 12/05/2024 19:22

Stockholm or Gothenburg. By August the locals will be mostly back at work.

3 people, flying from London but avoiding Heathrow (Luton, City, Gatwick all fine), budget is a piece of string because food/entertainment is variable. But keeping accommodation and flights/train low would be favourite. Not hostels but we aren't fussy. Would like to be close to things so no taxis if possible.

Good questions!

Riga anyone?

That's on the list!

As is Norwich @BluebirdBoogie Curveball but a good one.

Sorry @justalitteon 3-4 nights, depending on distance/flight times.

Eurostar to Ghent? We liked it even more than Bruges. Or Antwerp? Would Lisbon be too hot?

Good idea. Lisbon I think will be too hot.

Very late August then.. and definitely Gothenburg rather than Stockholm. Or Malmö, and catch the (cheap) train to Copenhagen for the day.

Crikeyalmighty · 12/05/2024 19:38

Copenhagen (we used to live there) although it's not cheap on food and drink- but you can get amazingly reasonably good quality hostels( private rooms)

Also Utrecht - I love Utrecht

cherryassam · 12/05/2024 19:39

Another UK option would be Bristol - great food scene.

Other slightly curveball British / close suggestions:

Aberystwyth
Guernsey
Ribble Valley
Malton
Deal / Whitstable
Bridport
Ullapool

Riga is nice - would recommend a day trip to Jurmala.

What is Utrecht like? Also looking for new places to go, I live in Scandinavia.

Bergen, lovely place to spend a few days although perhaps not that cheap.

junebirthdaygirl · 12/05/2024 19:48

I like Hamburg and as not too touristy might be cheaper.
And Dubrovnik had cheap enough rooms up loads of steps.. to rent when we went. Might be hot though.

We looked at Bergen but (I'm about to offend lots of people) we've spent a lot of time in Canada and the whole woody/lake/mountain thing is a bit last year. Sorry!
