Travel to Mexico - work trip

Hi,

I’ve been asked to go on a work trip later in the year to Mexico City and surrounding areas. I got myself psyched up to be away from my kiddos for more than a night for the first time. However, now I’ve started reading about travel to and around Mexico and I’m wondering if it’s wise to go due to safety.
Pre-kids I don’t think I would have considered it but now it feels like I’d be gambling.

Has anyone travelled to Mexico and not stayed in an AI resort and travelled about somewhat? And did you feel safe?

Thanks!

You'll be in a safe bubble as a business traveller. Presumably your company isn't sparing expenses on transportation including during your stay, and they'll be putting you in a good hotel.

I've travelled to cities known for being dangerous with work, but I've never felt unsafe because I've been shielded from the reality. Stopping in an excellent hotel and being chauffeured everywhere is the norm, so make sure you get it.

I've been to Mexico City a few times for work. It's fine so long as you're sensible. I loved it.

We (DH, me, 2 teens) spent 3 weeks in Mexico last summer - travelled from Mexico City across to Yucatan - so avoiding anywhere north of Mexico City and down towards Acapulco. We used public transport for the whole journey and had no problems. Didn't feel at all unsafe in Mexico City, just be careful like you would in any large city.

Your employer should do a risk assessment - do they have a travel/overseas department?

There's also the Foreign Office advice.

But I agree that, with some sensible precautions, you'll likely be fine and I'd caution against believing some of the alarmist 'advice' online.

I'm going to a European capital city in a couple of weeks and the safety brief sent to me by a colleague makes it sound like I'll be followed by muggers everywhere I go and stripped of my possessions at the railway station.

I'll be very surprised if it's anything like this and I'll just keep my wits about me, not wander around alone at night, not wave my phone and money around and I'm sure I'll be fine.

Cor that sounds amazing and very adventurous (as someone who is not well travelled).

Hope you had a great time.

Mexico City is fine - as others say, if you’re concerned, I’d make sure you are being accommodated in a good hotel and have sufficient expenses for private transportation from a reputable provider (the hotel will likely be able to advise)

I would second that the company’s risk assessment will probably make it sound horrendously dangerous. I travel extensively for work - they make the most normal places sound like you’re going to be fighting off danger on every corner.

Yes, this is a good point. By being thorough, they do make everyday risks you'd experience anywhere sound suddenly far more likely to happen!
