Has anyone got any tips for reasonable travel insurance. We're going to the US for a week and the average quote is £300!
One 62, one 57, some health issues.

Hmmm those health conditions must be pushing it up a lot. We recently got travel insurance for 7 days in the USA - travellers aged 46 and 55 respectively. It cost us £57.

If that price is the total for the two of you and includes proper full medical cover (emergency triple bypass surgery etc) and doesn't have a high excess or exclude "absolutely anything remotely connected with your existing issues" then I don't think it's too bad. American hospital charges are insane, and health insurance there costs a fortune. I know people your age who pay close to $1000 per month as a couple and they still have to cover the first $3000 per year out of pocket.

If you can’t afford the insurance, you really can’t afford to go.

You're a little ray of sleet aren't you? I didn't say we couldn't afford it, I just wondered if someone had a recommendation.
But thanks for your concern.

Check the price for annual cover.
It may be about the same as cover for two weeks in my experience of getting insurance for the USA.
Does your bank offer it? Ours is quite good value.

When I last looked it was about £100 for our family to USA but annual £110! So with health issues £300 may be about right. So see if you can get it to cover you for longer.

GettingStuffed · 10/05/2024 09:25

That's cheap, the cheapest I could find for annual insurance with our health conditions including US was over £800

Muchtoomuchtodo · 10/05/2024 09:41

What are the health issues? That will be the key factor in whether or not you can get it cheaper. Also looking at lowering the excess and having a lower level of cover can lower premiums but only you know if you’d be happy with that.

Is your US trip booked already? You really need to get insurance sorted asap if it is

As pp mentioned, if you have more than one holiday planned for this year it’s often more economical to get an annual policy.

BloodyAdultDC · 10/05/2024 09:42

Assuming your health issues could result in treatment being required whilst abroad, whatever the insurance costs it will be cheaper than even a consultation fee should you need medical assistance in the USA.

TwoBlueFish · 10/05/2024 09:45

So a comparison search on compare the market (or similar) I’ve notice that a few of the comparison websites now allow searches including medical conditions

It's £256 for us worldwide including USA, not even got significant underlying health problems but USA seems to push up prices for tiny things that many people have, eg declaring taking omeprezol, having had cataracts surgery and having taking antibiotics once past two years for an ear infection all affected it, oddly antidepressants didn't, go figure!

JoJothegerbil · 10/05/2024 10:19

I've had cancer and have used Staysure in the past for Europe and Australia. For this year's trip to Europe they were pretty expensive so I've gone with GoodToGo.

HPFA · 12/05/2024 18:45

This company was the only one which would insure our trip to France at a reasonable price when my partner was on a waiting list for treatment.

Might be worth checking out.
