I know this has been done so many times but I cannot get my head around it! My passport issue date was September 2015 and it expires in September 2025...I am fine for travel to the EU this July, yes?!?

Yes

Muchtoomuchtodo · 06/05/2024 18:58

Is the issue date less than 10 years ago when you’ll be travelling? Yes

is the expiry date more than 3 months after you plan to leave the EU country? Yes

It’s fine - have a fab trip.

If you’re returning from Europe mid July and your passport expires mid September isn’t that two months?

MyAmaryllisSeemsDead · 06/05/2024 19:02

So it depends

MyAmaryllisSeemsDead · 06/05/2024 19:03

Ignore me 2025 is next year! I’m wishing my life away!

If this is correct- then no, your passport is not ok.
I believe you need 3 months between return date and expiration date?

Yes

QueSyrahSyrah · 06/05/2024 19:07

100% yes, you're absolutely fine until the end of May 2025 (maybe a little later, depending on the actual expiry date in September 2025).

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 06/05/2024 19:08

It's fine

A passport needs to be valid for 3 months after your proposed date of return to the UK. It cannot be more than 10 years old at the date of travel no matter what (this affects some people with older passports who had extra months added when they replaced their passport early for whatever reason).

In your case your passport will be valid until September 2025, 14 months after your date of travel. Your passport is less than 10 years old. Your passport is fine for a holiday this July.

You will need to watch out next summer as you will be approaching a point where there will be less than 3 months left.

It’s fine

You don't mention the exact expiry dates, so in what follows I will assume that the passport expires on 1 September 2025. If your passport actually expires on say 11 September 2025 then the below applies with 10 days added, so for 1 March read 11 March, etc.

You are definitely OK to travel to the EU at any time until 1 March 2025. You could enter the EU for three solid months then and still be OK.

In fact you can also enter the EU between 2 March 2025 and 31 May 2025, but how long you can stay for goes down because your passport must have 3 months of validity left on the day you plan to leave the EU, as evidenced by the date on your return ticket (i.e., the ticket from the EU back to the UK).

Because your passport's start and end date are only 10 years apart (maybe give or take a few days) you don't have to worry about the quirks whereby the issue date is what counts when entering the EU and the expiry date is what counts when leaving. This affects people who had several months added on last time they renewed their passport, so that it is valid for 10 years plus up to 9 months. But, again, you can forget about that complication, which is what has been the source of a lot of confusion over passport validity post-Brexit. The UK stopped adding time on to passports when they are renewed in about 2018 (IIRC), so this issue will disappear over the next 4 years or so anyway.

Thanks everyone, of course I know that it's fine but for some reason my brain finds it very difficult to process the whole ten year/three month passport thing!

If you don't travel to the EU for more than a month, just pretend your passport expires 4 months before the actual date.

Deebee90 · 08/05/2024 00:43

It’s 10 years exactly with no extra months so you are fine
