Spending money in Mexico and tipping

I'm going to Cancun with two friends next month, staying at an all inclusive resort, for ten nights.

Can anyone advise me on how much spending money to take, and in particular how to go about tipping?

We plan to go to Coco Bongo's and Xcaret, and perhaps attempt para gliding or something. I'd also like to make use of the spa facilities and have a massage treatment.

Thanks.

I haven't been to Mexico but I have been to a lot of the countries below and to the side Grin

They are frequented by Americans and Canadians so tipping is definitely important. 1USD (or local equivalent) for the buffet chefs, 1 for each round of drinks, people helping with bags, basically everyone. I like to make sure I tip the women invisible people really well. So I leave money for the cleaners etc. about 2USD a day. With a note so they know it's for them, preferably in Spanish.

Paragliding/trips would be more. But it depends on cost and duration.

Take a LOT of small notes, I normally take USD because people tend to prefer it but again, not Mexico so I don't know if the currency is harder there. Never coins because they are a pain to change. And only mint condition notes.

Just order pesos and tip in their own currency. They lose money on the exchange from USD.

Thank you. I had read it was best to take pesos.

As it is all inclusive, how do we work out the tip? And do we still tip at every round of drinks?

Is there a ballpark figure to take with me purely for tipping?

If you're on Facebook search for groups relating to the name of your hotel. If you request to join you can then search for tipping advice in the search bar. Guaranteed there will have been plenty of posts about tipping over time which should be able to guide you.

We’ve just come back from 10 days AI in Mexico and hopefully I can help.

We tipped in US$ and tipped 2/3$ for every other drink brought to us in the hotel bar, about the same for each meal we had in the buffet and a bit more, 5$ for waiting staff at the A La Carte restaurants, we also tipped the room cleaner three times I think at about 5$ per time. In total, we probably got through around 100$ in tips.

Agree with the pp who said to join a Facebook group for your hotel, we did and got tons of information before we went.

Can’t comment on Coco Bongo or Xcaret and we didn’t use the spa in our hotel, but our resort had masseurs on the beach, yours might have the same.
