What do you think about Rimini?

We’re looking to go away the last 2 weeks of July and I’ve been looking at northern Italy, mainly Rimini and surrounding areas.

I’ve not travelled to Italy much so I haven’t a clue as to what it would be like. Could any of you share what your experiences have been or any recommendations?

For info, we’d be 2 adults and 2 kids ( 3 and 6 months) and we’d be going by car.

TIA!

It's a loooong way to drive with 2 young kids. Why Rimini? Much closer seaside areas on the West coast in Liguria.

I went when I was a child and hated the beaches all in rows and regimented.

Decorhate · 04/05/2024 07:53

I’ve not been but if you go I’d recommend taking a side trip to San Marino. Looks absolutely stunning

AnnaMagnani · 04/05/2024 08:05

No way would I drive all the way to Italy to go to Rimini. Also at the end of July it will be obscenely hot.

The areas surrounding it are nice but DH flat refused to go to Rimini (I wanted to go to a museum). We were in Pesaro which is pretty similar - beach crammed with as many recliners as possible, all hired by the same families in the same place every year. Fano was the same.

To get to Rimini you will be driving past a lot nicer places. But basically Emilia Romagna will be 40 degrees.

I’ve been to lots of different parts of Italy, but never Rimini. So rather than give any opinions on the areas, I would offer an alternative to consider of Lake Garda. I think with little kids you want to go to a campsite with really good facilities, and I would recommend Bella Italia for that. Great local area, beautiful scenery, good pools for the kids, activities etc. Rimini sounds like more of a resort for partying, but I could be wrong.
Have a lovely holiday, wherever you choose!

BathshebaEverdene1 · 04/05/2024 08:08

I think Rimini is a party resort popular with young people perhaps away without their parents for the first time.
That's the impression I have anyway.

Mammyloveswine · 04/05/2024 08:12

I thought it was a shithole

Kitkat1523 · 04/05/2024 08:29

It’s not a particularly nice place

ImCamembertTheBigCheese · 04/05/2024 08:31

I've been there for a holiday, I'd never go back.

BathshebaEverdene1 · 04/05/2024 08:34

Sounds like the Southend of the Adriatic tbh

Thescarynun · 04/05/2024 08:48

It hasn't got a great reputation, it's a bit like the blackpool of Italy. Not saying Blackpool is bad, but If I was visiting Italy this is the last place I'd go to. It will be very hot btw, I live in North Italy and July is usually high 20s to mid 30's, It think the hottest was 37°c inJuly last year. We have high humidity, so you can add another 5°c onto the daily temp for what temp it will feel like.

vincettenoir · 04/05/2024 08:52

I went there for a day trip once and the beach was lovely. Maybe a bit busy.

SuuzeeeQ · 04/05/2024 08:55

I am Italian and it’s indeed a place where you go with 17 on your first holiday without parents. It’s the Italian cancun/spring break. Would never consider it for a family holiday.
Everywhere in Italy in July with be HOT and packed but if you don’t mind that look at Jesolo and surrounding areas.

I also wouldn’t drive across Europe with a 6 month old in July. How many hours will they be happy to sit in their car seat and what’s the recommendation for that age? You will constantly have to stop for nappy change, bottles etc and again it will be hot. When I was a child and we drove to the coast in the summers in Italy, we drove at 3/4am to avoid daytime heat and traffic.

I thought you asked ”What do you think about rimming?” 😳😳

SuuzeeeQ · 04/05/2024 09:04

Honestly OP my Italian friends kids struggled in the last two summers and one of my friends told me they stayed indoors from 11am-4pm as it was so hot. (Beachside holiday in July) I worry that an English baby might be very hot, and then it’s not an enjoyable holiday for anyone. Italian kids tend to stay up late (10pm is the norm in summer holidays) and nap/rest indoors midday. Many Hotels have bans on using the pool between 12-3pm as guests are resting.

We all got very ill after swimming in the off Liguria

NowyouhaveDunnett · 04/05/2024 09:22

Try Grado. Nearer and much nicer!

Muchtoomuchtodo · 04/05/2024 09:24

I thought this was in Baby names and was going to be quite negative!

what are you looking for in a holiday? That seems a very long way to drive with young kids and you’ll probably drive past loads of places that would fit the bill.

kiwiane · 04/05/2024 09:38

It’s not nice at all

AnnaMagnani · 04/05/2024 09:40

@SuuzeeeQ makes an excellent point about how Italians manage the heat for themselves and their kids.

OP are you planning to run your holiday on British time - everyone is up for the hottest part of the day and a strict kids bedtime?

Or Italian time - long siesta indoors, everyone out with their kids at 7-8pm doing the passegiata and kids up til 10pm or later?

Clearinguptheclutter · 04/05/2024 09:46

I think you’d be nuts to drive to Rimini with kids in mid summer!! It’s a heck of a long way and not that nice.
Italian lakes much closer and more reasonable. Jesolo near Venice worth considering too.
Or assuming you don’t like flying, go to France instead

AnnieTor41 · 04/05/2024 18:26

Oh dear, just been reading this post with interest as we're going to Rimini in a few months - going to a wedding in Italy and decided to stay on for 2 weeks after that at the coast and went for Rimini! Hope it's not that bad! Think it depends what you're looking for in a holiday, I believe it's more an Italian family resort, very beach oriented, family owned hotels, no all inclusive. Having been to big Spanish all inclusives recently I'm quite looking forward to something different and being a bit more independent. I couldn't face doing it by car though but maybe if you're close to South coast it's easier, we're flying into Bologna and hiring a car and doing a few trips out to places like San Marino. I'm told it will be very hot but I don't mind that, depends what you like!

quizzys · 04/05/2024 18:56

OP has decided to go to Skeggie instead. 😂

Maybe they are driving from somewhere in Europe that's nearer to Italy. If not, I would agree with many of you that such a long drive from UK is not very wise with such young children in High Summer.

I agree with the Lake Garda option mentioned above. Stunning place and the campsites with kiddie activities are great.

It’s not that family oriented, it’s quite run down and mostly for Italian Teenager who want to go out drinking and clubbing. Maybe 30-40 years ago it was a family resort. When I was a teenager 20 years ago it was already a cheap party town. I love Italy but Rimini is the last place I would go to on a family holiday.

italy generally has very few AI resorts unlike Spain or Greece. I would change to Cesenatico if you want to stay in that area.

On the plus side you can find plenty of fake Gucci bags for €20 😝😂
