What to do with teens in Vancouver and Vancouver Island

We have flights booked for Vancouver for two weeks in August. So far, we have booked accommodation and car hire but that is about it. we have three nights in Vancouver (near Stanley Park), four nights in Port Hardy (the very north of Vancouver Island) and five nights in Tofino before heading to Seattle to visit friends for a couple of days.

We are a family, with DD15 and DS12. DS in particular absolutely loves outdoors activities and wildlife. We have enjoyed many summer holidays in the Alps and he loves the sorts of activities available there. He is also fascinated by first nations cultures and has loved masks (a bit specific, I know) since he was a toddler. He is autistic and has issues with executive functioning and so we have found that short and sweet activities tend to work better. I think he would struggle with whole day bear watching excursions, for example. DD enjoys finding out about different cultures, visiting towns and cities, and is a bit of a foodie. She will enjoy visiting anything ‘cool’. But she is also happy to do outdoors and wildlife activities, being a keen Scout.

We are all really excited, it’s a bit of a trip of a lifetime for us. However, it has been such a busy year for everybody. I feel like I have not even begun to think about what to do when we get there. We have a decent budget so I can afford to do a few special activities.

Any ideas, suggestions and experiences would be very welcome.

North Saanich/Sidney area near Victoria airport is absolutely stunningly beautiful and peaceful. There's a wonderful restaurant on a Jetty (can’t remember the name) and float plane rides. Highly recommend a walk at least in that area. Right next to the Pacific Ocean.
Nanaimo further up V Island is beautiful. Get the ferry over to Gabriola island. Just amazing.

Be very careful which areas you go to in downtown Vancouver as there's a huuuuge drug & crime problem.
A nice area is (or was last time I was there) New Westminster.

We loved Tofino and would go back at the drop of a hat. There are fab bear watching tours via boat where you can see bears on the shoreline hunting for crabs. Lovely beaches to walk too. We also liked Ucluelet and the Pacific Rim park walks. West Coast Wild is about an hour away and you can zip line and do float tours.

Granville Island is excellent for the foodie.

It does get very crowded if that's an issue for the autistic 12yo - it was an issue for mine, but maybe not yours! It was worth doing (DS was placated by interesting ice cream options before going safe), but it does get very crowded as it's quite compact.

I live on Vancouver Island. Tofino, surfing, hiking, biking are fun activities. Tacofino for tacos, Shelter restaurant for dinner one evening, also try Rhino Coffee house for one of their home made doughnuts.

Fun hike to see the WW2 plane crash site https://vancouverislandbucketlist.com/experiences/canso-bomber/#:~:text=The%20Canso%20Plane%20Crash%20hike,Canso%2011007%20bomber%20still%20remains.

Port McNeil isn’t far from Port Hardy, and I highly recommend this tour company to see Grizzly Bears https://seawolfadventures.ca/

Tofino Plane Crash – Hike – Vancouver Island Bucket List

The WW2 Canso Plane Crash Hike is a popular and unique hiking trail near Tofino to a ww2 Canso Bomber aircraft that crashed in 1945

We did whale watching on a rib boat. I found it much better than the time I had done it on a bigger boat as the journey is part of the fun - it can also get places quicker than a large boat.

We stayed in Ucluelet on Vancouver Island, which we liked. Definitely worth booking restaurants if you want to eat out here - lots of places were busy or closed earlier than we were used to.

Re bear watching. We didn’t book a trip, instead we went to look at this salmon hatchery - the bears often hang out in the river close by. We saw 4 bears playing and catching fish. Best to go after it’s been raining. DO follow the advice from locals - eg. don’t stroll down the road to the hatchery whilst munching on a sandwich…

We also enjoyed this zip lining place - was well run, nice scenery etc:
