City break to Germany (not Berlin)

DCIJackieDeering · 28/04/2024 18:31

I’ve offered to take DD (age 15) away for a city break in October half term. She’d like to go to Germany. We’ve been to Berlin, so looking for other suggestions. Ideally looking for art, interesting architecture and vintage shopping/ markets. Was thinking possibly Munich or Hanover but all suggestions welcome

I love Munich and Nuremberg.
My Teens especially love Munich

lolarun · 28/04/2024 18:34

Hamburg is great too :)

Munich is great. Lovely lakes nearby too.

Hamburg

SnickersWasAHorse · 28/04/2024 18:37

I love Leipzig. Lots of art but I’m not so sure about vintage markets. I prefer it over Munich. Much less touristy.

Munich is great! Lots of museums, all very central. Plus very easy to get about on public transport, even to palaces a bit further out.

It also has loads of easy day trips by train. We particularly liked Murnau and Kochel for trips into the Alps with museums related to the Blue Rider art movement.

Cologne
Great art gallery
Wonderful cathedral
Phantasialand.... go!

ChaToilLeam · 28/04/2024 19:02

Munich is fab, lots of great galleries and museums, you can also do a trip to Gabriele Munter’s house at Murnau. If you are in Munich on 19th October you can go to the Lange Nacht der Museen - it’s an evening once a year when many city galleries and museums stay open late and have special events on.

I like Munich. Last time I went I wanted to go on the 3rd Reich walking tour but was too pregnant to stay on my feet long enough. Bavarian food is just the best though 🤤

Curlywurlywurly · 28/04/2024 19:07

Another vote for Munich, but October may be more expensive.

I’ve been to lots of places in Germany but not with kids. Almost any city would be an interesting experience for a teen. Munich is particularly German and therefore lovely. But I spent a lot of time in Hannover as a teen and it’s a really nice city. Düsseldorf, Essen and Cologne are nice. Ditto Nuremberg, Dresden and Hamburg.

WhatWouldYouDo33 · 28/04/2024 19:20

Leipzig and Dresden or Hamburg and Lübeck
personally I find Munich not that interesting and the main attraction is called “English Gardens” 😅

AnnaMagnani · 28/04/2024 19:26

The main attraction in Munich is definitely not the Englischer Garten!

The Residenz, Marienplatz, Alte and Neue Pinakothek, Lenbachhaus, Pinakothek Moderne, Egyptian and Greek Museums, Nymphenburg Schloss... and that is barely scratching the surface.

TiredandKnackeredand · 28/04/2024 19:28

Would look at Hamburg or Cologne for the vintage market type stuff. And obviously Cologne has an incredible Gothic cathedral! Hamburg is just a cool, nice place generally.

Munich is v different to Berlin – polar opposite really. Lots of classical / ‘high’ culture. But likewise a very strong sense of place and character! Could be interesting to see somewhere really distinct from where you’ve already been. I think there is a lot of baroque architecture there, and you’re close to places like Neuschwanstein Castle.

Dresden has lots of interesting architecture from different periods and a bit of a studenty / counterculture scene (where you might find vintage markets!). Although not sure I’d go there for an entire holiday personally!

Hannover definitely wouldn’t bother with! Pretty nondescript place.

There’s also Dessau, home of Bauhaus, although not sure how accessible it is for flights.

Have fun!

SnickersWasAHorse · 28/04/2024 19:30

When we were in Leipzig last we got the ICE to Erfurt and Weimar. The Bauhaus museum is there as well as a lot of other art museums.

SabrinaThwaite · 28/04/2024 20:57

You could do a trip to Salzburg from Munich too - it’s a couple of hours on the train and good value if you use the Bayern ticket.

Yes! And Salzburg is gorgeous

Clearinguptheclutter · 28/04/2024 21:03

Nuremberg is great. Small pretty city and amazingly easy to get into town. But Munich is fab, you can go up to the mountains for the day really easily.

tizalinatuna · 28/04/2024 21:04

Freiburg is lovely. Black Forest around you. Trier is surprisingly fascinating with lots of Roman ruins

tinytemper66 · 28/04/2024 21:04

Cologne is lovely.

bumblebee1000 · 28/04/2024 21:15

I liked Munich, fab flea market, odd when they realised were were from uk, lots of stall holders kept aksing us to look behind counter or in back of van to show a vast amount of nazi stuff which they cant display now....but we enjoyed the city and trips out to the castle etc.

mydailymailhell · 28/04/2024 21:18

Hamburg is an amazing city
