How expensive is Copenhagen?

Thinking about a week here in the summer as it looks like there's loads the kids would love but really put off by reading how expensive everything is. We live in SE, near London, so we're used to London prices, is it much more than that? Some ideas of prices of things like a coffee, hot dog from a stall, casual lunch in a cafe would be would be so helpful. Are supermarkets much more than UK. We know booze is expensive, hoping could stock up in future free! Thanks SO much for any tips

It’s roughly London prices, alcohol is expensive many Danes take a trip across the border to Sweden to stock up, if it is important to you and you will have a car you can always go for a road trip.

Thank you so much, I'd seen about going to Malmö by train and thought that sounded a great adventure, so nice to know there's an added benefit!

Here are the menus for two cafes we visited so you can get an idea of the prices (sorry, you’ll have to Danish krone to GBP) www.12cph.dk/menu and madogkaffe.dk/en/drinks/ Personally, I think £4.14 for filter coffee is nuts.

Thanks so much, really helpful to have some real life examples. At least the food all looks nice! 😅

Echoing what others have said in that it's similar to London prices, although we don't drink much which I think is where you may see the higher costs, especially in restaurants.

Lots of lovely street food / casual places to go which are much cheaper and there is so much to do for kids, we've been twice with ours and there is still lots we would like to explore and do!

I went in the Autumn, we thought it was London prices, so expensive, but not shockingly so if you're in London much.

VERY! £25 for four soft drinks, a simple sandwich meal for four including 1 soft drink each £60! Denmark is ridiculously expensive

We live in Central London and found it roughly comparable. I think you’d find it more expensive. The SE is definitely expensive but it’s no where near Central London prices.

£10/11 each for sandwiches and the rest for drinks is about what you'd pay somewhere nice or somewhere touristy in London

Tip #1 - stay away from the tourist trap restaurants on the quayside at Nyhavn. Like all tourist places the world over, these command a "we saw you coming" premium of about 100% over prices elsewhere in the capital. Buy big open sandwiches and pastries from the supermarkets, bakeries or smørrebrød shops instead and picnic in the parks. Otherwise, prices in regular restaurants and places where the locals go are on a par with London.

There are dozens of good videos on Youtube from people who have visited Copenhagen - many with insider tips.

I live in London and this was more expensive to me. Maybe I went to weird places but I was shocked every day at the cost of everything. Such a beautiful place but I really didn't love it, the people seemed so grumpy but gosh it's so pretty

OhNoFloyd · 27/04/2024 21:59

I live in London and spent a lot of time in Copenhagen last year for work. I found prices pretty high, eating out particularly... and taxis- but the public transport is very good. I must admit, I don't really see it as somewhere I'd go on holiday, I much prefer Madrid (weather, food, prices very reasonable and a beautiful city) and Berlin (history, food, people are so nice). Hotel breakfasts in Copenhagen are amazing though 😊

We were going to go in the summer but were put off by people saying jow expensive it is.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 27/04/2024 22:17

£14 for a pancake with berries!

frumpyfoofoo · 27/04/2024 22:24

£14 for pancake and berries is normal in London! I paid £18 in Clerkenwell the other day.

Glystl · 28/04/2024 01:00

Thanks so much for all the comments, yes I was thinking from all the menus I've seen online it looked comparable to central central London. But to be fair, I payed £3.50 for a filter coffee the other day here. And it was takeaway! It does all look like things I'd actually really look forward to eating. We'd love to go Spain or Italy again, but I think we'll all melt in the heat in August. We love museums and getting out to see stuff and there seems so much for them to do in Copenhagen. We won't have a car so the fact it's all so easy with all the metro links (and won't be lugging cases with the toddler in 30 plus degrees) is a big draw!
