New York to Canada- two weeks, ideas?

I’m planning to book a surprise trip for my DH next year, he’s always wanted to go to New York.
we’ll probably only go once so I’m thinking we could travel up to Canada after a few days in NY.
any ideas? Is it worth going to Niagara Falls?
we like cultural cities, mountains, lakes, epic landscapes. We are not so keen on touristy places, lots of people, etc.
im thinking we could fly back from Montreal or Quebec?
TIA

Do you really want 3 more cities on top of NY as described above? Canadian cities will not tick your landscape boxes.

I have just been looking at a cruise that goes from Southampton UK Sept/Oct next year.
Its about a month long and does Canada and USA including New York.
I am very tempted
Enjoy your travels OP

@Twoshoesnewshoes , September is too early for the autumn colours in that area. October is the pretty month. If you want the leaves, book for mid to late October.

There are lovely train journeys through upstate New York to Niagara or Toronto, and that's nicer than taking a short flight to Buffalo.

Whatever you do, do not take the train from NYC to Montreal. It takes about twelve hours.

I think Avis rents cars that you can take across the American/ Canadian border.

I'd have a few nights in NYC then drive to Canada via Lake Champlain. Highway 2 is extremely scenic and goes across various islands.

@Mummyford We are not really going for leaves. We are in the Annapolis Royal area which is the other side of the Bay. So looking into that - hopefully whales around in Sept!

Oh wow, thanks everyone! So much to think about! I hadn’t considered Nova Scotia but that is a great idea. After NYC I don’t think we’ll necessarily want more cities, rather see the landscape.

For an itinerary, look at Audley Travel. There’s cheaper places to stay and you will need a car but I would think you could get to Halifax NS from NY. We have added in a few stops to a basic route but lots of options. Haven’t done it yet though - September treat!
