Interrailing in Europe with kids-itinerary suggestions and tips!

Has anyone done this before and can they share their top tips/itinerary?

DSs will be 12 and 10. Hoping to go for 2 weeks. Ideally would like 2 full days in each place (I know that probably restricts us to 3/4 places). Places with interesting things to see especially for kids-I’m thinking Italy/Germany/Switzerland/France. Start and end destination doesn’t have to be the same as long as it is flyable-to from northern England/Scotland.

If it’s helps, you can fly cheaply from Venice to Manchester with Ryanair.

So your not so rushed travelling, you could travel down slowly by train, stopping off in various places, then fly home from Venice.

Venice definitely on my wish list so that sounds like a good ‘end point’ 👍🏻

As ever Man in Seat 61 is your go to place for planning - https://www.seat61.com/

There are some interesting sleeper routes you could take as well if you fancy trying that for the adventure.

I'd work out where's cheapest to fly to and start your route there, whether it's Brussels or Amsterdam or Paris.

Head from there to Berlin and/or Munich. Then you can go to Switzerland, and on to Italy. Or get a sleeper direct to Rome and then come back via Venice and Switzerland, and back to Paris and home (as they don't do any sleepers between France and Italy at the moment).

I thought an interail pass included the fare out from the uk.

I'm guessing the day spent getting to and from France would count against that, although it could be an option.

Interrail pass does include your outward journey from Uk - including UK trains, but you have to pay a supplement for the Eurostar (£30 per person - books up quite quickly) - and you have to get to mainland Europe within that day.

We flew to Prague and did Prague - Bratislava - Budapest - Vienna - Tyrol - Munich - Brussels. Over 3 weeks mind. It was a fab trip. Dd was 15 and we let her pick what to do.
