Three weeks in Athens

I"m going to Athens for three weeks in May. I'll have a bit of remote work to do from the appartment I've rented but shouldn't be more than a couple of hours a day, but a part from that I'll be on holiday - my partner and a couple of friends will fly in to join me for one long weekend but if not I'll be on my own. I enjoy the outdoors and walking, I'd like to find a nice pool, I like museums genrally and would love to see an opera or concert. I'm mid thirties and female. I have an okay budget but not a massive one either ( under 1700€ all in would be good).

Does anyone have recommandations ?

You won't find a nice pool OP. To swim in the municipal pools you need a document from a local doctor giving you a clean bill of health (heart/dermatology etc). You also need proof of residence in that municipality which obviously you can't get either.

Luckily, there are beaches within easy reach. It'll be hot so I'd plan to be doing your outdoors stuff in the early morning or evenings.

@TakeOnFlea On wow! that sounds like strict pool rules! I might try to find a private club with a pool then .... And I'll try the beaches! Thanks

Yes a spa hotel or something or you could ask if the hotels have a day rate to use the facilities.

Lake Vouliagmeni is good for swimming (the fish nibble your feet though 🤣).

Would you try visiting any of the islands? You're a bus ride from Piraeus and could take your pick of ferries from there. No need to prebook

I definitely recommend a day trip to Meteora, especially if you enjoy walking.

@TakeOnFlea deffo up to visiting the islands! I'll look into that, thanks!
@Forgottenmyphone I'll also check Meteora, thanks!

I definitely recommend a day trip to Meteora, especially if you enjoy walking.

Not if you're scared of heights. I spent most of my trip sitting on the floor of the coach praying, and I'm not religious

brisedusoir · 24/04/2024 15:37

@GettingStuffed Thanks for the heads up! I'm okay with heights but will never be convinced to ride a camel again after my last trip abroad.

I wouldn't do Meteora as a day trip from Athens! Too far, too much walking, way way way too many steps. Only go if it isn't going to be hot.

There is so much to do on nearby islands or checking out all the sights in the Peloponnese.

You can spend the weekend in/ near Nafpalio ... lovely beaches and swimming in the sea!
Or go visit Delphi and surrounding area, lots of hiking and plenty to see.

If you can get to the port Andros is quite close and has some nice beaches but tbh for three weeks I'd just pick an island and go self catering somewhere with decent wifi. I like Kefalonia even though it's quite touristy.

Get a flying dolphin (boat) from Piraeus Harbour in Athens across to the island of Aegina for the day.

Athens has lots of outdoor cinemas , we went to one and it was great.
Unexpectedly enjoyable.

Sinuhe · 24/04/2024 19:28

If you are there at the right time, you could get tickets to see a play at the ancient theatre of Epidauros.

It's spectacular and a one of a kind experience!

Thanks all! looking into all your suggestions !

I'm sure you'll do this anyway if you're there for three weeks, but do have lunch in the area of Plaka, at one of the lovely little restaurants at the foot of the Acropolis.
