In New York with D&V

We’re in New York with DH & DC for what was meant to be a wonderful treat to ourselves, but things went wrong right from the start when I left my phone in the restroom at JFK shortly after landing, and by the time I discovered I didn’t have it and went back, it was gone. Now, two days in I have been struck by diarrhoea and vomiting. I think I’ll have to cancel the tour I booked tomorrow. Obviously this has spoiled things a bit for my family but there has been some loss of enjoyment for me not to mention the phone loss. I wouldn’t normally consult a doctor for what looks to be a 24 hour bug. I have done as much as possible to report the phone to lost and found at the airport (at a charge of £9), to notify it to Apple and to my phone contract provider.

But am I right in thinking that I will have a hard time claiming for any of it on my travel insurance? Advice from travel insurers/seasoned travellers would be much appreciated.

You might be covered on home insurance too. Hope you start to feel better , get hold of some rehydration drink

Oh no! Might be covered on home / travel insurance.

Do you need to cancel the tour? Could DH and the DC not go along?

Send DH to target and get some liquid IV sachets, good for rehydration. The US loves medication so get him to have a look around if there's anything else he can grab you too, hopefully it'll pass soon!

You’ll need a police report to claim off your insurance. I’m sorry about your D&V - there’s nothing worse than having that away from home. I hope you feel better soon.

Thank you, everyone, for your replies and kind thoughts. I was thinking I should try and book a separate room for the rest of the family for tonight at least.

I wouldn't worry about a separate hotel room, chances are that they're already incubating it.

You will need a police report though for claiming on insurance. Ask your hotel concierge, they're very good at this sort of thing.

I suspect if they are going to catch it then it's too late to worry now, unless it's the second room is to prevent disturbing them or,so you can have more privacy.

Fingers crossed you feel better soon.

It's horrible being ill on holiday. I had food poisoning in Malaysia a couple of years back and I felt so ill for a couple of days, and off colour for a little while after. It was luckily towards the end of our trip.

My partner had it on our last day in New York I was so surprised that he picked something up, sure it was food or something as I was completely fine, it was horrendous I really feel for you. We couldn’t even stay in the hotel as had to check out. It was a long old day till the night flight, spent so long in MOMA 😂 hopefully your family can do the tour and you have a rest and see if you can clear it

Hopingtobe4 · 17/04/2024 20:12

Sorry you're sick on holidays. As prev poster said the Americans love medication,I'm sure there will be something we haven't even heard of aswell as rehydration drinks.

I think the pharmacies are Duane Reid? I remember getting ibuprofen there and it being a lot stronger than home.

If there's any chance you might have to cancel anything you paid for because of the D&V, might be a good idea to consult a doc and get a diagnosis for documentation.

Some of the Duane Reade's are called Walgreen's now. CVS is just as good, if not better. Where is your hotel?

LostInTheBog · 17/04/2024 23:26

Luckily there is a grocery/pharmacy on the opposite corner to the hotel and DH was able to pick up some rehydration powders for me there I threw up again about half an hour ago. I’ve lost count of how many times that is. Maybe 7. I have persuaded to book another room for himself and DC just for tonight. It has cost us an eye watering $460 plus tax!

Poor you, how grim Flowers

Aswellisnotoneword · 17/04/2024 23:30

Depending on whether or not you want to 'let it all out' ASAP, so to speak, or try and be in better condition to sightsee tomorrow, I'd suggest better medication.

Anti-emetics to stop the vomiting. (Meclizine is one I can think of that is OTC in the States - it's sold for travel sickness but I have found it very effective in stopping hangover vomits!). Immodium for the other end.
