Not another Go fund me!

Is anyone else fed up with people begging for money on Go Fund Me, to bring a family member home from abroad, because they are seriously ill in a far away country?
He didnt have travel insurance as he thought he wouldn’t need it, being young and fit! There’s another article in the Daily Mail about him and the family are wringing their hands and begging for help. Whist I sympathise with anyone being seriously ill, this was so easy to avoid, and it keeps happening. It leaves a nasty taste in the mouth that it seems ok to beg others to compensate for other’s stupidity.

There was one locally, motorbike accident in Turkey, huge amount raised, injuries treated and flown home on standard flight, not much of a dent to the fund however family suddenly all upgraded theirs cars, booked holidays and completed home renovations.

A child's funeral is one of the few I would have sympathy with - no one expects to have to pay for their child's funeral.

The wedding might already have been paid for, before the funeral, if it was only a few months later and surely no one would grudge someone who'd lost a child the happiness of a wedding.

The Government has a fund for child funerals , the parents do not even have to apply as the funeral director can do it for them

thesugarbumfairy · 18/04/2024 09:47

My first thought when I read the most recent on DM was what a selfish fucker. Not even that young. 32 years old and didn't bother with insurance, so his family are left to find the funding to deal with his selfishness.
So I do get why they started a gofundme, but I agree it's getting ridiculous. For the sake of what, 20 quid on insurance.

I've been away in Europe this weekend with three middle aged people, regular travelers, do do a fairly high risk sporting event. Mot an extreme sport requiring extra cover, but a sport peole do occasionally die doing.

I was most shocked to learn I was the only one with travel insurance. I have an annual policy which doesn't cost much.

Yes it's stupidity or oversight. lt doesn't mean it's not awful for families when the worst happens though and I think any of us would do whatever it took in those circumstances.

If you do extreme sports, some of which aren't that extreme then it's unlikely a standard insurance policy will cover you.

No so you get insurance which does. DH paraglides all over the world, he gets travel insurance and ticks the box which says extreme sport cover needed. Hopefully the pp ticked that box for her annual cover.

It wasn't that extreme. It's true a standard policy doesn't cover everything, but it covers more than you'd think. For a trip I did in the summer, I was asked to check I had helicopter evacuation up to 3000 meters. It was covered as standard on my annual policy. But yes, always check, things can be added if needed.

wednesdaywoes · 18/04/2024 09:55

I get annoyed that they often raise far more than the target they're aiming for, so where does the leftover money go? Pocketed by the organiser no doubt

GettingStuffed · 18/04/2024 09:56

Travel insurance is only cheap if you don't have medical conditions , ours cost us £875 for worldwide annual, despite all conditions being under control

Sandwichblock · 18/04/2024 10:00

When you have pre-exisitn conditions is it only those that aren't covered if you don't upgrade?

BIL is having cancer treatment. They want to have a short trip to Europe. DSis of the mindset that if cancer was the reason they needed to get him home, she'd do it somehow and pay for it themselves, but he'd be covered if e.g. he broke his leg?

Bignanna · 17/04/2024 18:29

Then that’s very naive of them! Plus if they don’t get cover for risky activities, which costs extra, then the Insurers won’t pay out. They won’t pay out if the holiday maker was drunk at the time, either!

Not entirely true- they won't pay out if you are negligently intoxicated- such as injuring yourself because you were drunk driving, or submissions to hospital for alcohol intoxication, or belongings or flights lost or missed because you were too drunk to look after them or get up for your fight. If you have been drinking but not negligently so, or your drinking was not the main cause of your loss then they will still pay out. But like so many things with insurance cover you do have to take some responsibility to look after yourself too.

MermaidMummy06 · 18/04/2024 10:17

Some are unnecessary, too. DH is a financial adviser & a client died in a horrific accident which made our national news. He was stunned when I told him there was a gofundme as he'd just put in the substantial life insurance claim from their policy. They were also not in need of immediate funds. We figured it was well meaning family or friends trying to help.

The absolute worst was a young woman who injured herself on holiday in Bali & ended up being medivacced home. No insurance. She was a flight attendant!

shearwater2 · 18/04/2024 10:22

I've never heard of this or seen an example until reading this thread.

FoxRedPuppy · 18/04/2024 10:25

I've just gone down a Gofundme rabbit hole browsing the site! I agree people should get travel insurance.

shearwater2 · 18/04/2024 10:28

Oldermum84 · 18/04/2024 07:49

Yep really annoying.

And the ones for dog operations when people didn't get insurance. I pay £50pm for my dog to be insured. If you didn't want to pay that don't get a dog, or pay for their life saving operation on a credit card. Why should I pay for my dog and yours?

A lot of things are excluded from pet insurance- most only cover for one lot of treatment per condition. Plus the premiums double once they get older. So if they got the same thing twice or the condition got worse and more treatment was required, it wouldn't be covered by insurance.

NoisySnail · 18/04/2024 10:33

I agree some of these situations will not be covered by insurance. There are exclusions in any policy and injury being your own faulty because you were drunk is virtually always excluded.

shearwater2 · 18/04/2024 10:33

ShalommJackie · 17/04/2024 17:40

Yes! There was a really sad case recently where a TikTok user died and her friend/ sister in law / god knows what did a gofundme but then closed it and asked for direct donations into her PayPal or bank account and they raised ££££ but there has been no accountability for where that money went. Probably on takeaways as they asked for more money for the funeral.

Recently the sister in law/ friend went on holiday with the money. All very suspect. The worst bit about it all though is that despite 3 adults being in the house at the time she passed away, and the fact they were meant to be taking it in turns to sit with her she ended up dying completely alone. So to ask for money for a funeral/ holiday/ money to start a charity when you couldn't even make sure she didn't die alone is gross to me

Sometimes people wait until their relatives have gone out of the room/left the hospital etc until they actually pass away. I wouldn't necessarily criticise them for that part.

Bignanna · 17/04/2024 15:04

You won’t be sent one. The begging is in the media , often highlighted in a newspaper. There is a Go fund me page that lists all the appeals.

People still read newspapers?

Even online most articles are unreadable due to all the ads and clickbait.

BirtyDird · 18/04/2024 10:43

I just scroll past as they annoy me. I've also seen too many where people's houses have burned down and they have nothing left. Clearly had no insurance for that either. They annoy me even more as often it includes children and its just irresponsible not to insure things like your house, car and holidays if go on them.

HoppingPavlova · 18/04/2024 10:47

@shearwater2 People still read newspapers?

Yes, online. I have a subscription to two online news services that puts its content digitally as well as in physical newspaper (circulation of which has plummeted as people have swapped to the content online). So even though I access the news content online, I still say ‘I read it in the newspaper’ as it’s same news provider, same content, just a different format. Obviously more content, as it all gets updated plus breaking news as it occurs, whereas subscription of physical product means you get stuff per a static time point.

wednesdaywoes · 18/04/2024 10:50

@BirtyDird A couple who live in my area had a house fire a few years ago. They had no insurance but had collections done for them and the woman constantly asked for things on local FB groups for 'free or very cheap'. They got given lots and lots of stuff.

Since then, they've been on loads of holidays and she is always bragging on FB about things she's bought for her kids. And still goes on about the fire to get attention and sympathy.

Annoys the hell out of me.

WaitingforCheese · 18/04/2024 10:56

We pay a fortune for DHs insurance as he has some health issues but we obviously want him covered for them all.
His brother who has the same issues only buys the basic and doesn’t tell them about his extra issues, he refuses to understand they won’t cover him if something happens.

Depends if you take out insurance for ongoing conditions or not. Always advisable in case your pet develops a condition like diabetes, which needs lifelong care. But it costs more. People forget that pets are a privilege, not a right

Peonies12 · 18/04/2024 11:18

Yep, no sympathy. if you can afford a holiday, you can afford insurance.

RishiSunak · 18/04/2024 11:22

Hello Everybody,
I think i might start one of these gofund thingies myself. Looks like I may be losing another of my chaps soon, and this could knock a hole in our bank account if we have to have another by-election and that, in turn, could effect the 'Big One' later this year.

Perhaps I should bite the bullet and go for the an election now, but if I lose I won't have Chequers for the Summer Recess. Crumbs, what a nightmare. 😰

NoisySnail · 18/04/2024 11:22

People do not have contents insurance when they are poor. And no it is not cheap if you live in a rough area.
