Hong kong as a family?

redcabbage22 · 10/04/2024 20:57

Hi there,

We have the opportunity to go to Hong kong with my husband for 6 days end of May. He will be working for half of it and I will be exploring with our 3 children (3,10,13).
The more I look into it, the more I am unsure this is the right trip for us.
Has anyone done something similar?
Thanks

The Disneyland there is one of the smaller ones and could be an excellent day

Hong Kong generally is a safe place, and easy to get around. Lots of other things to do too - go over to the giant Buddha at Lantau and cable car ride (probably another whole day), Ocean Park, maybe a day on a beach (eg Repulse Bay), go up The Peak, shopping - including the night markets, junk trip (or just the Star Ferry), loads of great places to eat

What is it that you've read that has led you to think you wouldn't like it?

Yes did it with DDs when they were 14 and 15. DH was also working and didn’t have much time to spend with us so we went everywhere ourselves. Pretty much everywhere that Ethelswith said and also walked up to and around the Zoo. We walked all over the place and also used public transport to get around - which is cheap and extremely easy to navigate (much more so than London Underground for example). Absolutely loved it, people are generally friendly and happy to help if you have any problems and yes, it’s pretty safe too. I think you’ll enjoy it!

There are lots to do and easy to get around with public transport. Download the Citymapper app. That and your phone map is enough to get you everywhere.

I will add the Ocean Park water park to the list of suggestions. Bring water shoes as footwear is recommended. We wore crocs and tevas but most locals have those used for kayaking and pedal boarding.

It is very safe and easy to do with children.

Have been to Hong Kong many times with my dcs. Also recommend Disney, ocean park, star ferry, cable car to lantau island..lots to do and very easy to get around. I also felt very safe in HK.

I've been on my own and the underground etc was easy to navigate, and we also spent 36 hours there with the kids (on the way back from Oz) and only managed to do Disney, but I think you'd have a great time as a family. Lots to do like the big Buddha, funicular up Victoria peak, cable car near the big Buddha, and it's just so different to Europe in vibe, lots of Buddhist temples to see. In terms of Disney it was our first Disney experience, in 2019 it didn't have a lot of the scarier Disney rides for the 13 year old, but it does benefit from really short queues, like 5-10 mins, or even walk straight on, and similar queue times for photos. There was a bit more of a queue for the shows. You wouldn't get that in any of the other Disney parks. The food was a bit grim in the lucky nugget saloon, which is the only place we ate. There are a couple of other theme parks in Hong Kong too. You should definitely should go!

The foreign office view, which I expect you've read:

Go! You may never have the chance again. Asia is fascinating, good for the children to expand their knowledge and horizons. Food is wonderful 😍

We just came back today and Disneyland was very crowded. Queues are up to 40min. It might be because of the new frozen area that brings in a lot of tourists.

fretaway · 13/04/2024 18:08

Would definitely go. It is very easy to get around as underground signage is all in English and is way more simple than the Tube in London!
PPs have mentioned all the places to go, Disneyland is not a must do as it is quite small so you can skip that if you want.
