Bath Thermae Spa

Hello

Has any gone to the Bath Thermae Spa? any tips about the best way to do it/best package? I'm not the most experienced spa go-er, not much clue. am planning on going with another MN-er for a day at the spa and a night of eating, drinking and nice B&B-ing. Public transport only.

the one other thing that would make it perfect is having a garden to visit too....

thanks

Yes, I have been.

I like it. It's quite municipal which I like about it. Not luxurious. The treatments don't get the best rap but it's a nice place to go and swim on the roof and sit in the steam rooms.

Where do you want to eat? Transport not a big issue as you can walk about easily.

You want a garden? You could go to the Botanical Garden in Royal Victoria Park - that's nice. There's a Georgian garden off one of the houses in the Circus which is open sometimes too.

what do i need to take pliz

ScottishBoris · 23/01/2010 11:10

I've been twice for a two hour spa session - just the thing to sort out your hangover from the night before. We got the train last time and it's a quick walk into the centre of Bath from the station. It's £22 for the 2 hour session, which gives you access to the both pools and the steam rooms. You can hire a robe, towels and slipper for £9 extra, but loads of people take their own - I will be next time too. The treatments were all booked the last time we went, so I'd recommend booking in advance.

We stayed here in one of the garden rooms - was really nice - it's a nice walk down to the town centre, but I'd recommend getting a taxi back (up quite a steep hill).

We also ate here - which was a bit pricey but the food was great.

Hope you have fun - am jealous now!

SherriHewsonsNipple · 23/01/2010 12:32

do we need slippers

ScottishBoris · 23/01/2010 15:51

Most people who didn't hire just took flip-flops.

SherriHewsonsNipple · 23/01/2010 15:57

ah right
tell me more please

ScottishBoris · 23/01/2010 16:00

MayorNaze · 23/01/2010 16:01

oh is v v g and i think i saw alistair mcgowan last time i was there

3 floors - swimming pool with rapid (not like centre parcs madness, like peaceful tranquililty , steam rooms/saunas and hot pool on roof outside - DEF recommend this in winter instead of summer.

treatments also available but lots to enjoy with standard entry fee if all booked up

MayorNaze · 23/01/2010 16:09

oh no don't take a book. you just lie there and relax. take a friend, then you can chat. a book would get soggy

also posh cafe that you can have a healthy smoothie or wine in.

you need a swimming costume. it is not THAT kind of spa

mrsmike · 24/01/2010 12:36

I have been about 5 times and have seen lots of people reading on the loungers round the downstairs pool. We never hire robes or slippers, rip off really, just take your own flip flops and huge towel. Also be warned, footbaths often not working, nice when they do work though, also be warned can be many canoodling couples esp midday for some reason but overall v nice day out.

mrsmike · 24/01/2010 13:17

also only 3 out of 4 steam rooms were working before christmas! sure ok now though

MrsFlittersnoop · 24/01/2010 13:20

I went with my best friend just a few days ago - I've been several times now and have always had a really nice time.

Don't bother hiring robes, they are flimsy cotton ones and get sopping wet almost immediately. They also get nicked by people too mean to pay for their own! .

I took a large sportsbag with warm thick towelling robes, towels and flip-flops for us both. Bring your own shampoo etc as well - the dispensers in the showers were empty when I was last there. The lockers are very large so storage is not a problem.

Robes are important at this time of year because you wander around between the different pools and steam rooms and clammy soaking gowns are not comfortable in this weather when you go to the outside pool on the roof!

We went in the evening and there were a LOT of canoodling couples lurking in dark corners of the rooftop pool (the lighting is very dim) and best friend kept muttering "Get a room, you lot" under her breath! The atmosphere was great though - everyone utterly blissed out floating around in really hot water while the temperature outside is below freezing, and great views across the floodlit city at night.

Be prepared for a long wait to get in, I see huge queues there every day.

If you don't want to lug your "spa" bag around all day, the Bath Backpacker's Hostel opposite the police station in Pierrepont Street (and just up the road from the railway station) is open until 11.00pm and will store any size bag for £3.00. It's 5 minutes walk from the spa.

SherriHewsonsNipple · 24/01/2010 20:33

good tip re hostel -
well it was great
q not tooo bad
although we had pre paid voucchers we still needed to wait - we thought htey need an info film on a loop as oyu wait so it would speed it up

all clean and nice had 4 hours which was perfect, no treatments.
lunch nice - cheeky glass of wine. no irritating people at all or snoggers

ALTHOUGH we did see denis lawson there in his trunks
didnt bother showering after as we squeaky clean. did hire robe but would take next time. they said Tues is least busy day .
