Cheap city break for family of 7

Does it even exist?
Looking for a cheap mini city break in August for 7 people age range 5-60. Ideally 3-4 rooms. I’m not getting much for a reasonable price on airbnb so thought I should cast my net further afield. Is an abroad city break even doable? Budget up to 1k for a couple nights

Try Malaga. Lovely city, gorgeous tapas, Picasso museum and a beach.

Maybe try Brussels or Bruges. I am a travel agent and Eurostar and hotels not overly expensive in those locations if you want to travel by train.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 08/04/2024 23:55

Do you mean in the UK or abroad? As surely flights alone will cost this much in August .

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 08/04/2024 23:55

Sorry, I see you've written abroad.

Theinfamousfive · 08/04/2024 23:58

Thanks for suggestions will take a look.
I’m open to Uk and abroad. I widened the search to include abroad as sometimes there are some great finds with flights and UK breaks esp with airbnb don’t work out that cheap! That’s why I wonder if I’m tasked with the impossible

Warsaw or Krakow

samarrange · 09/04/2024 00:15

What is the £1000 budget meant to cover? For example, hotel (including breakfast or not), other meals, flights, other transport, occasional drinks, etc.

muzEqy · 09/04/2024 05:29

Up to 1k per person?

TizerorFizz · 09/04/2024 09:17

I suspect abroad is not possible for August if it’s £1000 total! Here you would be looking at £125 a night for each double room if there’s 4. If you can squish into 3 rooms, you have more choice but short breaks of 3 nights are probably the minimum in August. Many holiday areas would want a week and not 2 nights. Maybe look at somewhere less popular?

TizerorFizz · 09/04/2024 09:21

There’s loads of choice around Lincoln. Just seen a few great larger rentals on booking.com but I don’t know your dates in August. Just be flexible on location and you can spend time together.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 09/04/2024 10:17

Where are you based in the UK (for flights )?

Funf · 09/04/2024 10:30

North wales?

TroysMammy · 09/04/2024 10:31

Swansea and Gower and pray for sunshine.

LipstickLil · 09/04/2024 11:01

Is that £1k total budget for flights/accommodation for 7 people?

You know it's 2024 right and not 1974?

PutOnYourRedShoesAndLetsDance · 09/04/2024 11:03

York?
Loads to do in and around.. even Whitby/ Scarborough is near.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 09/04/2024 11:46

I was also going to suggest York - we have had a 3 generation mini break there. Shedloads going on for all ages, small city, easy get around. If you stay outside the city walls accommodation is cheaper. We stayed at the Novotel on Fishergate which was £240/night for a room of 2 dc and 1 adult for 2 nights, including swimming (they have a pool), breakfast and parking. (DM stayed with a friend in town). This was a couple of years ago.

MrsSkylerWhite · 09/04/2024 11:48

If you time it right you can get a couple of family super rooms at TL, Docklands for far less than that. So much free stuff to do in London.

Itsanothermanicmonday · 09/04/2024 14:04

You will struggle in August to find anywhere decent that you all might actually want to stay either in the UK or abroad because of the flight costs in peak summer holiday season.

Apart from maybe camping in the UK, rooms in a Travel Inn or Premier Inn etc.

Theinfamousfive · 09/04/2024 14:32

Thanks for those of you with helpful suggestions. The approx 1k budget is for all 7 yes, for accommodation and travel (can be stretched a little). All spends, extra activities, food will be sorted separately.
Its 3 generations and for a big birthday so just a chance to spend time together.
All live not too far outside of London so visit often so not keen to go there. Thinking 2-3 hour drive from north of London ideally.

There’s loads around Burford in the Cotswolds. Again booking.com. Lots of nice village accommodation.

Bjorkdidit · 09/04/2024 19:38

You can get flights from £30-50 return pp, which would leave over half left over for accommodation. What about somewhere like Gdansk, interesting city with beach, parkland, museums etc (or anywhere else you can go on Ryanair probably for that price) - put the dates and budget in the flight finder and see what comes up.

bravotango · 09/04/2024 19:48

Off the back of the "why Liverpool" thread in Chat, I'm going to suggest Liverpool!

bravotango · 09/04/2024 19:48

Disclaimer, I live there and think it's great and good value 😁

Agreed! Tons to do and beaches to visit even.

I don't think that budget will get you abroad.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 09/04/2024 22:13

I thought I would have a little look for some cheap flights for you but it's a bit overwhelming really . I've looked on Ryanair and put in a couple of random midweek dates in August for you - but there is such a long list of places you could go to , and to make it worth it for a couple of days you are going to need well times flights, especially allowing for the time spent in airports. There are some pretty cheap flights to places in Ireland but the accommodation wasn't cheap due to the number of bedrooms you would need. It's worth having a look through to see if a destination catches your eye but probably you are wasting money and time which could be spent on better accommodation in the UK somewhere.
