Huttopia or glamping in France?

daffodil2023 · 07/04/2024 13:13

Hi all, looking for a reasonably priced site in France to stay in some kind of glamping hut or site accommodation (but not a tent!) for me, DH and DD8.

Has anyone stayed in Huttopia? Or can you recommend an alternative campsite in France? Or even a region that won't cost a fortune and has local things to do. DD8 like swimming, activities like Go Ape, paddle boarding, cycling, the beach. We're happy to do the same and also like nice food, pottering around, the occasional museum/cultural site etc.

Any thoughts welcome! Thanks :)

Haven't been yet but we've booked one of the lodges in the Huttopia Village site in the Loire Valley this summer. We usually go to campsites with lots of entertainment, waterslides etc but thought we'd try something different for a few nights this year. It's not cheap though. We've booked mobile homes with Yelloh, Sandaya and les Castels in the past, there's loads of choice of sites and accommodation with them.

We've stayed at the Huttopia in Versaille and really enjoyed it. The site is lovely with a pool and a few amenities, and you're a 10 minute walk from the train station so can be in central Paris in no time. Loved it!

We went to the Huttopia Village in Paris for our honeymoon 17 years ago and it was great. The little house was very nice and the wood burning stove was great fun. They had a nice little pool, and the sell absolutely amazing coffee from the site office in the mornings. It was very nice to walk into the town and try to figure out the supermarket.

Downsides: Very pricey and the actual room that we were sleeping in was barely any bigger than the bed, so we kind of had to walk banana feet to leave the room, but I would go back there absolutely 100%. It was great.

Thanks for the alternative recommendations - didn't realise Huttopia was an expensive choice. I think the friends that recommended it to me camped so massively reduced accommodation costs.

Hope you have a lovely time in the Loire Valley!

Banana feet 😂 I know the feeling! Will have a look and see what the cost is for a slightly bigger room. Didn't consider Paris tbh but might be nice if you can have the pool plus some time in a city

Not Huttopia and quite a trek but this site ticks most boxes.
It's large but never feels overcrowded, you'd definitely need a car though. The site has the usual operators but you can book direct, their new units are very nice.
Lovely, safe lake to paddleboard, can hire or take your own. Pool complex with slides, bike hire and lovely local routes around the lake to take. There is a fantastic high ropes place about 20 minutes drive away. Plus some great beaches, Arcachon is lovely and in a sheltered bay so safe for paddling.

Forgot to add, it's an hour from Bordeaux which is lovely to explore too.

This sounds perfect! Thank you. Do you know the name of the specific campsite you're referring to? I've attached a screenshot of the list of campsites

Apologies, it's La Rive.
We've been 3 times now, it's such a lovely place.
The sunsets over the lake are something else!

This is the high ropes place, really reasonable price for what you can do. It's 100x better than go ape in my opinion.

Also, forgot to add this - it's on our wish list!
The accom looks interesting!

Hi, we’ve stayed at quite a few Huttopia sites over the years.
Senonches
Millau
Fontevielle
Cordes sur Ciel
Another couple I’ve forgotten!
Some of the tents are basically just as good as the huts as they have bathrooms…that’s my opinion anyway! I wouldn’t call them glamping sites but they are pretty decent and it’s lovely to be in natural/open surroundings (having said this, i’m not sure what makes a glancing site!?) Most of them you can walK/cycle to local villages. We drive so go all over, we love France and find driving there fine.
Just one thing to note - this year most of France is a bit more expensive due to the Olympics. When I started looking for summer I was shocked at the price increase until I realised why.
We love our Huttopia holidays and go every year now!

Oh yes of courseee the olympics! I'd totally forgotten too. Will keep that in mind when looking. We did actually find pretty cheap flights and would potentially drive too so maybe it's still possible. Pretty much everywhere else we looked had extortionate flights, let alone everything else. Sigh!

Thanks for the Huttopia tips as well, it sounds lovely and nice to hear you keep going back. I think glamping for me means a proper bed and proper toilet. I'm happy enough in a little shepherds hut or some kind of mobile home, and I've stayed in a bell tent before (which included a proper bathroom and bed!) but we don't have camping gear (tent, sleeping bags etc) and I really don't want to invest in that, or sleep in a sleeping bag on the floor basically!

No worries. So with Huttopia, in most of the pre-erected tents, it’s a proper double bed. But, bedding is like blankets and sheets I think. I take our own so not sure. The toilet and shower are nice and modern, albeit small. You wouldn’t really need to take anything camping wise. It has a full kitchen and cooker etc. We take our own bedding as travel around France and drive when we do it. My partner is pretty fussy about things and he likes it; lol.

Thanks for this :) love the idea of taking duvets too haha. Still not got round to booking anything but it's on the list!!

I've stayed on the Huttopia site at Saumur which was nice. We have a caravan so didn't use the accommodation but it looked similar to most other sites. We found Huttopia more low-key than some other sites we have stayed at, which I liked. There is entertainment but it's not too full on. The one we stayed at had a couple of pools but no water slides. I found them to be a bit cheaper than some of the sites with more going on.
