Venice In Two Days Time

I have just booked a last minute 4 night trip to Venice with DS17 and being spontaneous is very unlike me!!! We will be staying near Campo Santa Magherita. Please can anyone recommend any reasonably priced, good places to eat in Venice (my son has hollow legs!) And, does anyone have any suggestions for things to do in the evening? So far I have booked a Venice Free Walking Tour (2 hours). On Sunday I understand (from my new guide book) some of the museums are free as it is the first Sunday of the month. We plan to go to Museodella Musica. I am going to to book tickets for Secret Doges palace Tour. We plan to mostly walk around and visit St Mark's Square, Basilica di san Marco (I would like to go up the bell tower - will I need to book in advance?) I tried to book a visit to T Fondaco dei Tedeschi Rooftop terrace however it is fully booked until the end of the month. We'd like to go to Murano, Burano, The Lido; go on a vaporetta/gondolier, bridges etc. I'd like to visit the Peggy Guggenheim although DS will be less keen! There is certainly plenty to see however I also want to get the right balance of mooching and visiting the sights so won't do everything above I'm sure! Is there anything I've missed you think my son might like? Many thanks x

I loved the Peggy Guggenheim and get over to San Giorgio if you can, the bell tower there is a good alternative to San Marco.

Campo Santa Margherita is a great spot! It has cafes and a lovely fruit market IIRC.

When we visited (a few years ago admittedly), there were nice casual bars and restaurants serving tapas and the "aperitivo" evening buffet near there with tables next to the canals.

Not at all traditional (!) - but the Hard Rock Cafe is in an interesting corner next to Pizza San Marco and teens might like it.

Places to visit - St Mark's Campanile has a nice view and the Aqua Alta bookshop is always recommended. There's also a decent walk around the Arsenal end of the city if you like history / architecture.

Thank you very much - great suggestions :) I have just tried booking tickets for Secret Itineries Tour at Doges Palace (32E for adult and 20E student) fully booked on their website for the whole time we are there!!! Gah so much for being the new me, spontaneous and last minute :)))) We would like to do this tour (in English) on Sunday April 7th or Monday April 8th. Happy to do it on its own or combine it with another tour/trip eg St Mark's, Murrano, Burrano etc. Does anyone have any suggestions (which don't cost the earth) how we can book tickets? :) Many thanks :)

Just get the ferry over to Murrano and burrano and walk about, so lovely on a sunny day.

for hollow legs, I forget the name but there’s a chain that’s a bit like subway except for pasta - like choose your pasta, your meat, your sauce etc and eat as a take away. That was good. And regular stops to get chichetti!

Yes, you can just get the vaporetto to Murano and Burano rather than doing a proper tour - lots of the workshops are open and next to the canals so you can just wander round to take a look. I

Standing up and eating and drinking in bars at night is much cheaper than sitting down.

Go further out before you eat. https://www.venezialines.com/blog/eat-venice-budget/

And yes the normal ferry out to the Islands is fun and easy to do.

Just wandering around taking in the atmosphere is one of the nicest things to do. We went in the middle of August and it was surprising how quickly you got away from crowds.

Don't know your budget but if you want to save a bit of money on food it's worth popping in to any of the chain supermarkets you go past - it's surprising how many of them have good and reasonably priced food counters.

There must be good sit-down places to eat in Venice but we never succeeded in finding one!

Many thanks everyone. We're off tomorrow and in the midst of packing :)

Don’t know if this is in budget but we took our kids to an evening concert https://www.musicinvenice.com/chiesa-di-san-vidal--locations-classic-music.html?id_luogo=239&filtro=4&dal=03/12/24 - it was great, very accessible

They also really enjoyed Murano glass blowing demonstrations and shops

Vaporetto ride down the Grand Canal (no need for expensive gondola ride IMO)

Visit a couple of traditional mask shops

Food wise, tramezzini (sp?) are the traditional Venetian very filled mini sandwiches, a good lunch, buy them to take away and sit on a canal edge

Chiesa di San Vidal events and concerts
