Chickenpox and holiday

HELP! Anyone with chickenpox and holiday experiences? DS is on day 4 of the dreaded pox and we are due to fly out on Sunday. DD hasn’t had it before and seems to have dodged every case in school (praying that she has had it without symptoms)
Do we get a fit to fly (if we can) and chance daughter getting it out there or try to cancel?
hubby thinks if DS is ok to fly then we should go as DD may not even get it.
Any advice or experiences are grateful appreciated 😊

I think the point is that my son wouldn’t be unwell but recovering and non contagious and my daughter is an unknown so at this stage not unwell.

Why ask then when you are clearly going to go?

It’s a discussion and I am weighing up all options. Health and financial. This is what this platform is for unless I have missed the point? @OnceUponARainbow88

That’s what I thought. Clearly only looking for people to say ‘yes go, it’ll be fine’.

I get what you’re asking and I think it makes sense. Annoying that you’re late on the vaccine for DD, that could have made a difference. However, as it stands you could try to push for the unfit to fly, claim on insurance and rebook- this would be my preferred option as DS will need to stay out of the sun plus the chances of DD getting it out there are quite high and PP’s stories of getting stuck over there effectively in quarantine don’t sound fun even if insurance paid for it. The alternative is you get the fit to fly, if spots have crusted, then cross your fingers but personally I don’t think I could relax constantly being on pox watch so I’d only be doing that if I couldn’t find a doctor to declare DS unfit to travel so it came down to risking it or losing the money. Rubbish though, I really feel for you.

Surely you just follow what your travel insurance will cover. So if son has scanned spots and a valid fit to fly and daughter not ill, you go. If son not scabbed so no fit to fly, you stay home. If daughter presents symptoms before departure, you stay home. I would not cancel on a what if though.

@InTheRainOnATrain thanks, you make good points. Yeah it’s not ideal any way you look at it!

@Upinthenightagain not at all. I asked for peoples advice and experiences which I have received a lot of different view points and personal experiences. Clearly I will make my own decision at the end of it.
Thanks for your help though 🙄

@Traveljo - it’s so tricky but I agree with @Newnamedillydally I know there are some horror stories on here but there is also a good chance that your DD might not get it and as you say, you can’t cancel ‘just in case’. Ignore all the self-righteous posters insisting that you shouldn’t go even if DD is well. It’s easy to dish out advice like this but I’m not sure how many would stand by it if they were in your situation!

Not holiday related but just to tell you my experience of the dreaded pox - my DD had a very mild case at 11 months old before DS was born, she only had a few spots and was not at all ill. DS didn’t get it until he was 5 having been closely exposed to it many times previously at playgroups, nursery, pre-school etc. I braced myself each time but he managed to dodge it until he started school. Unfortunately he was very poorly with it, especially as he suffered with eczema too.

I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you that your DD dodges it this time and you can enjoy your holiday.

@Inastatus thanks for your experiences, it’s really helped me.
I knew I would get a bit of a battering 😂 but yeah it’s all personal but helpful when working it all out and to be fair an interesting discussion for anyone that has this problem in the future and frantically googles what the F* do I do.

Hi did you go? We are in a similar situation £ I don’t know what to do for best

RatherBeOnVacation · 30/04/2026 19:36

My DD came out with chickenpox on day 2 of our two week holiday. She would have been contagious on the flight but had zero idea.

The doctor at the hotel was very reassuring. We are one of the only countries in the world that doesn’t vaccinate against it so most people in our resort would be “safe”.

They reserved us some loungers on the beach at the furthest point on the beach so we could be outside (obviously she couldn’t go in the pool or kids club etc) and we had a separate table in a sectioned off area of the restaurant. She wasn’t allowed to go to the buffet etc. Being able to go in and out the sea and be in the sun helped dry out the spots super fast. Timing meant we were fine to fly home as planned.

OK, it was far from ideal, but we still had a lovely holiday and were well supported by the hotel.
