How good are you at walking?

The drop off point looks like it’s near Blackfriars station. You could walk down to the river and then along the river to Westminster, then go through St James Park and along to Buckingham Palace, possibly getting the tube back to Blackfriars from Victoria if that’s within budget.

CultOfTheAirFryer · 01/04/2024 23:10

It’s about an hour’s walk from Blackfriars to Buckingham palace via Big Ben. Or you take the district line, or the 26 bus.

Get on googlemaps to look at routes.

www.tfl.gov.uk is the official London journey planner. The walk described above sounds great and then maybe ride a red bus back? A bus fare is only £1.75 and you tap in with a contactless bank card.

. Marking place - checking postcode as I don't recall a Victoria Street in EC4.

Motnight · 01/04/2024 23:18

Download CityMapper app Op, it's really good at showing you the different transport routes (and walking) in London.

VenetiaHallisWellPosh · 01/04/2024 23:18

There's a Queen Victoria Street in EC4.

VenetiaHallisWellPosh · 01/04/2024 23:21

You're near Mansion House/Blackfriars. I'd take the District or Circle lines to Westminster and Tower Hill if you don't want to walk. Just use contactless on the gates.

Yodel294 · 01/04/2024 23:22

By the way, the South Bank of the river is generally more interesting to walk along, rather than the northern bank. You'll see the Globe Theatre, Tate Modern (free), Roy's Festival Hall, London Eye. Then cross over Westminster Bridge to see the Big Ben and the HoP close up before you head inland to Buckingham Palace and the Mall.

HundredMilesAnHour · 01/04/2024 23:26

You'll be dropped very near to St Paul's Cathedral if you want to walk there (5 mins) to see it from the outside. From there you can walk over the millenium foot bridge to the South Bank where Tate Modern is (free entry - a good toilet stop) and continue walking along the river to Westminster. Lots to see on the way. Cross the Westminster Bridge to see Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament, and from there you can walk to Buckingham Palace.

RosesAndHellebores · 01/04/2024 23:26

OK @MidnightMusing5 you are being dropped at Queen Victoria Street, near Blackfriars.

Four hours should just be time to do what you want.

Take the District Line to St James's and walk along the mall to Buckingham Palace - double back and either walk through the park (it's very pretty) and up St James's Street to Green Park (Viccy Line to Victoria, then district to Westminster). At Westminster you will see Big Ben and the houses of Parliament. Walk over the bridge to the Southbank, have a look up at the London Eye and meander back along the South Bank - it's fun. Cross Blackriars Bridge and if you have time take the children to The Monument - it's steep and historical. You may have time to whizz up to Leadenhall Market (Diagon Alley) where some of the HP London scenes were filmed.

Tube: you use your bank card to swipe in and out again. Your eldest yiu will need to buy a day travel card for, your youngest travels free - use the big gates to get you all through.

I hope you have a lovely day.

LampShadeTaj · 01/04/2024 23:27

You’re near Mansion House tube station it’s more of a business district but you can walk in 5 mins to see St Paul’s cathedral you’re also not far from The Tower of London if you wanted to walk towards the Thames and see it from outside.

Also the Sky Garden is free for views

Thank you for all your responses.
we’re en route to London.

I vaguely remember seeing on social media (a while ago) there is a apparently a “normal” service bus that goes past most of the sites (not the tour bus) but I can’t for the life of me remember which one it is? Does anyone know the number bus; and where I would get the bus from??

thank you!

You need the CityMapper app OP. You can search bus routes and find the stops you need.

TreesAtSea · 02/04/2024 11:59

I think it's the number 11 bus you're referring to. I've seen it mentioned on another London thread. Hopefully someone will correct me if I'm wrong. Not sure where you catch it.
Have a great day.

Are you on your way home @MidnightMusing5 and did you have a nice time?
