Help - best family destination Indonesia?

Possibly have the opportunity of combining a work trip with a reunion with a friend and a family holiday in Indonesia next month. Has anyone been somewhere in Indonesia on a family holiday that they loved and didn't break the bank? If so where and where did you stay? Friend will be coming from Sumatra and work thing is in Bali (nice to have if nowhere suitable in Bali) but could go elsewhere quite happily.

We are looking for a low stress trip which involves a relaxing environment (not in a city etc) ideally with lots of bits for a toddler to enjoy (swimming pools, relatively easily accessible wildlife etc) and not too much moving about so baby and toddler can get used to their new home from home. Would probably prefer a serviced villa but they are looking £££. We are ok all in one room but would ideally prefer 2.

Budget flexible but I'd say probably max £250pn for accommodation for 14 nights, ideally max £200, so £2800-3500. Flights look to be c.£2k on top.

Help, Google is not finding much at the moment!

We are just back from our third month long trip to Sanur in Bali. Much quieter than other parts of Bali, beaches nicer than the West coast, boardwalk that goes for around 6km so easy for walking, lots of really nice and cheap food options. Kids are adored so no worries there, with two little ones I would do hotel rather than villa as most villas have unfenced pools that would totally stress me out - you can get a company to fence them but I think it is quite expensive. Sanur is an easy 30 minute drive from the airport too. If you wanted somewhere quieter Amed or Candidasa would be other options. The islands (Gillis and Nusa Lembongan and Penida) are great but I am not a fan of the ferry journeys and again would find it stressful with little kids. There is a great FB page - Sanur, Candidasa and East Bali where you can get good accommodation recommendations if you give your budget. May is good as you avoid Aussie school holidays when it gets busy and it is dry season.

You might get more replies if you posted on the Australian board as Indonesia is a very popular holiday destination for Australians.

Personally, I didn't like Sanur - underwhelming in comparison to Ubud, even though it may be less touristy, I found it boring. Ubud is just idyllic and has the monkey forest and beautiful walks.

@Traceability thanks, is there anywhere you'd recommend staying in Ubud?

@Mnk711 For villas you are probably best lookng at Airbnb or booking.com although as I said the open pools would put me off. Emerald Villas are well located but same issue with pool. With kids lots of people like the Prama which is right on the beachfront and has a kids club, Puri Santrian is lovely and also beachfront. Whatever accommodation you book make sure you are on the beach side of the bypass.

Yes, Sanur used to be known as Snore but not any more 😁 Ubud was lovely years ago but is crazy busy now, especially the Main Street, and most people who are not first timers avoid the monkey forest as the monkeys can be pretty aggressive. I think the old markets have gone which is a shame. Surrounding scenery is stunning though and there are some amazing eco resorts but 3 nights would probably be plenty. I will always choose to be near the sea but that is just personal preference.

That makes sense as I did go years ago! Such a shame about the markets, they were fab!
