New York and beach destination holiday

Hi, my husband and I are looking to go on holiday in July with three teenagers. We’d like to spend five nights in New York (probably Air B&B) and then a week somewhere on a beach before flying back to London. Does anyone have any tips on where the best beach destination would be? We don’t want to spend a fortune! Thanks

Not sure about beach destinations but be very careful with Airbnb in New York. There are laws protecting property in the city, many of the Airbnbs are illegal.

The Hamptons? Coney Island?

It's 4 hours drive to Cape Cod which is classic US beach holiday.
Nothing is cheap in the US currently!

We recently did this! We flew London-New York, did four nights there, and then flew down to Grenada in the Caribbean for a week of beach. Then flew back to the UK. Booked the London-New York and Grenada-London flights on Virgin for £450 and the New York-Grenada on jetblue for £150.

Caribbean
Cape Cod or anywhere on the Maine Coast
Virgina Beach
North Carolina
Florida

It all depends what kind of beach holiday you like and how hot and humid you can do.
The US doesn't have the AI resorts etc we have in Europe, so most hotels may have a pool but that's it, you go to the beach with all your stuff.

All these are typical areas for the US to go on a beach holiday.
Nothing will be cheap though, prices are through the roof everywhere. And be prepared to have slim pickings, good areas will be booked up.

We were in Newport/Rhode Island last year and also drove to Cape Cod. I would have loved to stay longer there, it is beautiful.

NY clammed down significant on AirBnB, so if you find the elusive unicorn make sure it legit. Maybe look for a serviced appartment or appartment hotel.

Do you want American beach or Caribbean beach?

July is in the rainy/hurricane season for a lot of the Caribbean/Florida/Gulf of Mexico, so you can expect an afternoon storm or two if you head that way. I don't think anywhere in America will be cheap, and certainly not in July. I'd probably head to the Cape Cod region.

Have you priced up New York accommodation and food etc? It's very expensive at the moment.

Thank you everyone. Lots of options and I’ve looked at them all this afternoon! I didn’t know that about Air B&Bs in the US so I think maybe a hotel might be a better idea. We’ve also been looking this afternoon at Dominican Republic for the beach week and found an all inclusive for £1,800 which seems very cheap! I think the flight costs and the amount of money we’d need in New York may make our plan too expensive, but we’ll keep looking. My daughter turns 18 this year so it might be her last holiday with us, but the boys want to do a beach holiday so we’re trying to do both, but it may prove to just be too expensive.

You can rent a car and go out to the Hamptons but it can be very expensive. Might be cheaper than flying somewhere else tho
