Go somewhere you love or go somewhere new?

Last August we went to a destination we loved. It was very expensive and quite basic (remote) but was gorgeous.

This year we want to stay a bit closer to home and save money. We've picked somewhere that we both want to go. It looks lovely and we'll stay in gorgeous places. But I'm not getting excited I think, because I've never been to the country so I can't imagine it. Whereas I can look through my old snaps of the other holiday and can.

So, is it better to go somewhere you love, or go somewhere new?

I'd opt for somewhere new, it's not always a good idea to go back.
In 2021 when we couldn't have a proper holiday, we did several trips around the UK . We often re-visited places either of us had been to, & without exception they were all disappointing.
Some of the fresh places were as well, but we found some really nice towns & cities.

We always go to the same place, we love it. We tried other places but they did not match up and seeing as its an only a once a year large expense, we do not want to waste time and money. We found the perfect place for us, its the only one that gets us excited so yes we will carry on going back.

I travelled and worked around the world when I was younger including backpacking around Asia with no clue where we might end up one week to the next.

My parents took us on holiday to different countries every year

I couldn't imagine holidaying in the same place twice

How utterly boring

There's so much to explore out there

I've never had a bad holiday.

That said I've been back to Disneyland Paris more than once with the DC but they were taller and older each time so the experience changed each time.

I cannot imagine going to the same place twice. It's a big world.

TakeOnFlea · 29/03/2024 11:47

We do both. Usually somewhere new but we do have a place that is tried and tested.

We know we can rely on it to be exactly as we expect so if we are holidaying with family or friends we tend to opt for that.

We do have a lot of holidays each year though. If it was just once a year I'd go somewhere new.

Where are you going OP? Maybe we can help you get excited!

I am 65 and have been travelling abroad at least twice a year since I was 19. Years before children, years with children and now just the two of us again.
I always booked somewhere different. DH complained that I just wanted to keep going until I found somewhere we hated. The only repeat destinations were in the UK such as Center Parcs and Scarborough where I have family.

Now that we are older and have been to so many places we have started to go back to some favourites. So far it has been a slight disappointment!

I do two holidays a year. One to one of three destinations I love and one somewhere new. It is just different. Going somewhere I know well means I know what I want to do, where I want to hike and eat etc so its really relaxing and the other has the interest st of exploring.

We also do both. Once or twice a year we will go somewhere we’ve been many times. It’s to relax so we go for walks, read, have lots of nice food & spend time with our adult kids.

But dh & I will also do long weekends in new places. I have a long list of European destinations I haven’t been to which we are working through. I’m less interested in long haul now.

Movinghouseatlast · 29/03/2024 16:17

We try to do both. Our holiday last year to the place we love was totally ruined by selfish twats next door who played loud music 24/7 on a tiny island renowned for peace and tranquility.

As I get older I prefer new places as time contracts and I feel.its only 5 minutes since I was there before if I go somewhere I've been before!

NCTDN · 29/03/2024 21:38

There's so many places to explore! New every time

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 01/04/2024 22:21

I like revisiting places I've enjoyed but also visiting new places . I do understand what you mean about not feeling particularly excited as you can't picture it - I'm often a bit apprehensive when I go somewhere new. But often it's the holiday I've been a bit unsure about that is the one that I've enjoyed most .

novocaine4thesoul · 01/04/2024 22:35

Go to the new place. You sound like the sort of person who has chosen well and carefully, and at the very worst, you can moan that it is not as good as the old place (and I doubt that it will be truly worse on every count, not least the cost.) "old places" change and this can leave a bad taste and wishing you had tried somewhere new. You might end up with two good places that you like to go in the future, and maybe even the desire to find a third "good place". Go with an open mind and low expectations, and see how you get on x

Voowoo · 01/04/2024 22:39

Go somewhere new, generally. Unless the place you love is Japan, in which case definitely return to Japan 😅

Kitkat1523 · 01/04/2024 22:41

Somewhere new every time….the only places I revisit are Perth Australia as we have family there
