How much spending money for Japan

hattie43 · 28/03/2024 11:55

As per the to title I'm going to Japan for two weeks and have no idea how much spending money I'll need .
I'm going on a tour so all hotels / meals / excursions are included but I will need money for spending in our free time , tubes , snacks , souvenirs.
I'm thinking £2000 or so but I have no idea .

Is the £2000 just for you?

ShadowBeam · 28/03/2024 11:58

Sorry, just read it properly.

£2000 will be absolutely fine, have an amazing time!

Bobskeleton · 28/03/2024 12:01

£2000 seems a lot if you have all your necessities paid for.

This is by no means a equal exchange of experiences but I spent about a week in Tokyo during my travels. It was on a backpackers budget, so maybe £50 a day max for everything (except accommodation). I still had a thoroughly good time!

Hope you have an amazing holiday! I'm jealous of all the amazing food....

Japan is surprisingly cheap. You can get a decent bottle of Italian red wine at the 7/11 or Lawson convenience stores for £4. A Coke from the vending machines in most places is 80p, £1.20 in Tokyo. A set lunch (Teishoku) is about £6. Most other catering is at comparable prices to the UK, and nobody expects a tip. So if you are on an all-inclusive tour I don't think you don't need more than £20 per person per day, although of course the sky's the limit on souvenirs.

One tip is to always have actual cash on you. Cards are more common than pre-Covid but cash is still king. Try to ensure that you always have a few ¥1000 (£5) notes and ¥100 coins on you, as they are what the vending machines like best.

I think that's sufficient. Japan is cheap but that's also why you'll end up spending lots on random snacks and souvenirs and shopping.

How many people is that £2000 for?

Japan is a very cheap place to buy snacks and souvenirs.

If it’s just for one person, then that seems really high to me if it doesn’t include meals, excursions or transport between cities.

The usual snacks, souvenirs and metro costs aren’t going to come anywhere close to £140 per person.

£30 for that sort of stuff per person each day would be a generous allowance. So if there’s 5 or fewer of you in your group then £2000 will be plenty.

£2000 is about right.

It’s cheap…but doing ‘nice’ things costs money. Also if all your meals are paid for…I’d wonder about quality of them and budget in extra for getting nice Japanese cuisine whilst you’re out there… you can’t go to Japan and not have their authentic dishes from decent restaurants

Thankyou everyone, £2000 is just for me

In that case that will be tonnes. Even if you were being pretty indulgent, I can’t see how you’d spend anywhere close to ¥25,000 per day every day on snacks, souvenirs and local travel/attractions for just one person.

When are you going? The exchange rate is really strong at the minute, which really helps.
