A quick post-exams break with DS... where though?

I'd really like to do this with him, just the two of us. He loves history, natural history, Classics, science, museums... we'd planned to go to Athens but I've been looking at flights and even budget ones are a lot more than I'd naively anticipated. It IS the first week of July, after all! Another confounder is that (cheap) flights that get back home too late are going to be problematic as we need to do the ongoing travel ourselves, and coaches etc don't drop us close enough to home. DH can't come and collect us, he has to be at home with the other DS!

Looking at Eurostar to Paris, that's a lot cheaper but also the times are much more doable in terms of getting back to our local station under our own steam and then getting a quick taxi (as opposed to getting back from Gatwick!) or even a lift from DH if it's not late. But cheap accommodation in Paris is hard to find - the Ibis hotels look ok (apparently £55 a night!!) but I'm really wary of the bed bug issue in cheap accommodation in Paris (and indeed, the only place I know I've been bitten by bed bugs was in Paris, and that was back in the 90's).

I'm feeling stupid and uninspired. Where else can we get to really cheaply, preferably via Eurostar because of the cost and number of train options, that will be fun, historical and not cost the earth?? I need some doable options to put to him.

I'd love to be able to do this with him - I was lucky enough to be taken off by my mum after GCSEs, A-levels and BA, it felt like a sort of rite of passage and a lovely treat.

I just looked at destinations on Eurostar
Lillie , Bruges and Amsterdam may fit your brief but I don’t know re cost
Lillie has a natural history museum

Zippedydoodahday · 27/03/2024 19:51

Totally ignoring the Eurostar request, Budapest is fabulous and very reasonable.

Zippedydoodahday · 27/03/2024 19:53

Personally I found Lille very underwhelming with a strong smell of urine on the streets.

hooplahoop · 27/03/2024 19:58

How about an interesting Eastern European city ? Prague , Krakow? Accommodation might be cheaper and quite a few flights

astarsheis · 27/03/2024 20:23

Took DS to Berlin. We had a fab time. His main interests are history and politics so there was lots to do.

floradora · 27/03/2024 20:25

Paris hotels are crazy because of the Olympics. What about Nimes - visit the Arenes, the Pont du Gard? Or Rome?

LoserWinner · 27/03/2024 20:27

Bruges has a lot of history.

londonmummy1966 · 27/03/2024 21:28

Amsterdam is lovely - had a break with my dd recently. Also if he likes classics then you can fly to Rome or Split from City Airport which is easier to get to and from than Gatwick

Rome?

Wishlist99 · 28/03/2024 06:46

Rome or Berlin- why don’t you factor in a cheap airport hotel the night of your arrival back in uk to open up airport options and travel home . Yes, Paris Olympics will be impacting accommodation!

Pottingup · 28/03/2024 07:25

Rome is great but budget wise Budapest is also fab. Took my teen boys there last year and they really enjoyed it. We got a cheap Airbnb. Really fascinating walking tour of the Jewish quarter and lots of interesting information about WWll and life under communism. The food was good and cheap ish. The spa baths were lovely. There’s an island in the city where you can hire bikes. Good caves to visit and various museums.

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 28/03/2024 07:28

Granada? Lots of history. The Alhambra though may be difficult to get tickets.

Rome is always a good shout for history.

Riverlee · 28/03/2024 07:28

Amsterdam was my first thought, and I believe you can get there by trains now.

Avoid Paris - Olympics being held there this year.

catmack16 · 28/03/2024 07:33

Via Eurostar to Brussels you could see Brussels but also easy to get to Antwerp or Gent which are both very interesting cities. Brugge is fine but Antwerp and Gent are more interesting with good museums, shops and food.

LiterallyOnFire · 28/03/2024 07:37

Completely different idea, but how about Pompeii? You can fly to Naples cheaply from Stansted, as well as Heathrow/Gatwick. Depending where you are that might or might not help.

FurnitureAddict · 28/03/2024 08:09

Eurostar to Brussels and then train onwards to Ghent or Antwerp (beautiful cities) or ice train to Germany or even continue onto Copenhagen

Spaceracers · 28/03/2024 19:28

Berlin would be great - loads to do and has 'cool' factor for a teen. It's lovely in summer too!

HarpQuartet · 28/03/2024 21:54

I'm sorry, I don't know if it's cheap, but I think the Eurostar then TGV to Avignon is a very easy platform change and it has Roman ruins and a palace.

GlomOfNit · 28/03/2024 22:00

This is all great, thank you all. I don't know why my mind went blank, I'm normally a Europhile but I just couldn't think!

Berlin is definitely on our shortlist! I've never been either. Eastern European cities are also very tempting as they're completely new to me.

You know, it goes to show how out of touch I am at the moment that I hadn't even considered that Paris will be crazy-busy with Olympics this summer... 😂 I'm not much of a sports person and I think if you'd asked me, I'd be hard put to say WHERE they were this year! (DS knew, however.)

Rome and Pompeii are on the whole-family shortlist, as DH hasn't visited either of those places either and I think he'd probably leave me if I went without him! Grin We'll try a Roman half-term break one day.

I'd stay UK based and go fro Edinburgh as first choice. Loads of history, ghost tours, castle etc. Might be reasonable if you go before the Fringe starts.
Next choice would be York or Bath.

Clearinguptheclutter · 29/03/2024 16:04

consider Berlin. I love it.

Clearinguptheclutter · 29/03/2024 16:06

I’m going to Brussels next weekend. Very easy on Eurostar and a quick Google suggests loads to do. I think it’s underrated as a tourist destination. Also easy to do a day trip to Bruges/Ghent/Antwerp.
