Am flying to Perth with a 3yr old and a 1 yr old this August to explore SW Oz for 3 weeks. Need any tips for long haul travel with kids.
Also, any unmissable treats for our itinerary?
Should we bother to pre-book accommodation as it is off-peak season? Looking to stay in campsite cabins and farm stays.
Want to avoid too much driving and ideally would stay in each place for at least a couple of nights.
Thanks for your help.

Woppla, you are brave! I took my Ds to Oz-Perth first actually, at age 3(just), and it was as stressful as hell! The flights were ok when it was night time, but otherwise, he wanted to be EVERYWHERE!!! Make sure you have plenty to keep them occupied...it's a long time in a small area to be chasing after small ones and trying not to annoy other passengers...!

On our return from Sydney, I discovered Phenergan(sp?), it's stronger in OZ, but you can buy it over counter here for travel sickness...check with air line because it comes in glass bottles. 1 year old is too young for it though, but it was a blessing for my Ds.
Good luck and have lots of fun! It's a fantastic country!

I am in Oz the now, flew with my 2 girls one nearly 2 the other nearly 5 months... they did sleep and wander and staff were very good, and the passengers were too.
Just had different toys n snacks n things. My parents came too tho so it helped having someone else to hand them over too plus youngest could go in bassinet so could eat food occasionally...
I went ruond SW oz a few years ago with girlfriend cant mind all we did but 2 weeks we hired car went south and then north to monkey mia so you'lll have lots of time to do stuff. If I rememeber Albany was nice and all the Margaret River area.
Good luck x

We went to Australia last Nov with our 9-10 month old. We took night flights where possible so that he would sleep. We flew with Singapore Airlines - who were fantastic with children.

You can buy Medised or Calpol night which has a mild antihistimine in it that helps them sleep. Just changed rules for selling it for under 2yrs - but this is only as some parents are overdosing babes with it as it also has paracetamol in it. Most of my friends have used this for long haul flights to help settle them if they get fractous.

We took disposable bibs so that we didn't end up with lots of washing and so we could throw them away. We took travel packs of baby wipes (from asda or waitrose) as they are smaller but just the right size for hand luggage. Used the 3 clear washbags from M&S to put things in - bottles and beakers etc in largest one, nappies in middle one, cosmetics and drugs like calpol sachets in the small one.

best advice we were given was to pack small toys that you don't mind losing (e.g. cardboard books) and keep them for different parts of the journey so they get a treat. (Also means you don't worry if you lose them on the plane). Ask friends for old toys, go to poundstretcher type shops etc - don't have to cost much but things like plastic little people, toy cars.

Travel snacks we found easy were - rice cakes, mini boxes of raisins, organix soft rusks mini packets, mini cheddars, breadsticks. Grapes, kiwi fruit, bananas, apples were good too.
