I have a week's leave to take in early June, £1400 available to fund it and a remote project I'll need to work on for a couple of hours a day — so require decent wifi.

Want somewhere a bit warmer and sunnier than the UK. Don't want a beach holiday but if someone knows the perfect coastal hotel near an interesting city I'd be interested. Fancy a city with access to countryside/ natural beauty within reach on public transport for a couple of day excursions. I want history. I've been sleeping badly recently and peace and quiet — no music, no shrieks and yells from swimming pools and bars — is really important.

Anyone done done something similar? What would you recommend? I find myself wondering whether it's possible to find a quiet AirBnB in Venice or Valencia or Paris but those seem very obvious choices. What interesting towns/ cities in Europe would offer what I'm looking for? A week can be quite a long time to putter round on one's own: I can fit an awful lot into a few days of sightseeing, so there need to be plenty of options. Not Lisbon or Porto, thanks: I did them a couple of years ago.

How about some of the inland cities in Italy; Perugia, Orvieto or Arezzo? I think either Ryanair or Easyjet fly there and the train system is go good and cheap that you could easily fit in all 3.

Or, Switzerland in the summer. Very warm and sunny and completely beautiful. Lucerne or Montreux spring to mind.

Thank you, great suggestions. I'll google and check flights/ transfers and options. I stayed in Lucca a few years ago and loved how easy it was to get around by train. Used to get off at little towns, have lunch, explore, go on to the next — so Arezzo might offer the same but different.

Still wondering about Venice. My partner can't manage more than two days puttering round museums and galleries and churches, so perhaps this is my opportunity to 'do' Venice properly. But it seems a bit of a cliche and I imagine it'll be very busy in June.

I've done a couple of holidays in Switzerland and have always planned to go back walking there. Switzerland and Austria are, as you say, very beautiful. Possibly a bit too expensive.

A friend has recommended Annecy, which I know little about. I'll start my research this evening. Thank you.
