Bucket List Holidays before teen is too old to come with us

We have 1 ds who is now 16 and I’m sure it won’t be long before he doesn’t want to come away with us on holiday. I’m thinking about where to go on holiday over the next couple of years, will ask him of course also. We’ve been cruising, plus visited Asia and Europe. Very active so just a beach holiday doesn’t work. And as we do a lot of hiking etc in our normal life, sometimes things badged as “adventure” isn’t really an adventure. Money not really an issue.

Any suggestions for what you would prioritise over the next couple of years please?

Costa Rica, Borneo, New Zealand, Maldives (check for a good house reef), have you done South Korea?

Defiantlynot41 · 19/03/2024 12:02

Safari, have done 3, all different, all amazing
Canada especially west coast/Vancouver/Vancouver Island/bear watching
USA but not necessarily theme parks eg Seattle, San Francisco, Yosemite, Yellowstone

Defiantlynot41 · 19/03/2024 12:04

Oh, New Zealand and Australia (enough there for several trips - Tasmania is also on my list)
Cambodia and Vietnam
Northern Lights

JustWhatWeDontNeed · 19/03/2024 12:04

Do you have your own bucket list that you want people to prioritise?

If there isn't anywhere particular you want to go then I wouldn't worry about it tbh.

If money is no object at all, then Galapagos, Antarctica (include Falklands and South Georgia for a mega trip), Alaska or Canada for the bears, Churchill for the polar bears, Japan, Gorilla trekking in Uganda, climb Kilimanjaro plus safari, long trek in Annapurna...

I really enjoyed the Pantanal in Brazil, but I love wildlife. Bolivia, Peru...

Botswana?

Road trip in America

A trip connected to a hobby. Eg. To see a favourite European football team in home stadium

Learning to sail - flotilla holidays etc eg Sunsail, Mark Warner etc

Learning to sail - flotilla holidays etc eg Sunsail, Mark Warner etc

Or dinghies/windsurfing at Neilson etc.

I'm not sure that you necessarily need to do 'bucket list' holidays with your kid, they've got a lifetime ahead of them. But something like learning to sail can set them up to be able to do more themselves iyswim?

Sweetheart7 · 19/03/2024 12:12

Coasta Rica or Mexico

ErrolTheDragon · 19/03/2024 12:12

If you provide good holidays of a type they like they may be happy to carry on with you for a while longer - my dd is 25 and she (and her BF) still happily comes on boating type hols with us.

TerrorAustralis · 19/03/2024 12:20

Sailing in Croatia
Skiing in Japan
Safari in South Africa
Touring the Northern Territory (Kakadu, Uluṟu, Arnhem Land) and swimming with whale sharks in Ningaloo Reef and exploring Karijini National Park in Western Australia
Walking the Bibulmun Track or riding the Munda Biddi Trail in South-West Western Australia
Diving in Flores, Indonesia

Stompythedinosaur · 19/03/2024 12:23

Costa Rica has been out best holiday ever and was very active so sounds like it would suit.

We're about to set off to Japan, which was in our list, and can report back about how it was in a few weeks!

MostlyDry · 19/03/2024 12:56

I love these! Thank you - lots to think about.

I'm currently looking at a canoe safari in Botswana, followed by river trip then Victoria falls before heading for 3 days in Mozambique on the coast, trailfubders are your best bet as they put together the itinerary

We did what's been a 'bucket list' holiday for DH and I for a long time last year with our teens - Iceland and New York. Four nights in each - obviously total contrast in terms of the experience in each place. Iceland was hiking, wildlife watching etc and I think would definitely provide the levels of activity and adventure you're after. And New York is amazing if you like cities at all.

New Zealand is great for an active family holiday. And second the suggestion of Costa Rica - we haven't been there as a family, but went pre-kids and it's very high on the list of places I would love to take my children.

We are in a similar position thinking about what we're hoping to do while they're still coming with us. Planning a month in Australia/Thailand the summer that they've finished GCSEs and A levels. Though it also looks like they'll be happy to continue to travel with us for a while while we continue to pay!

idontlikealdi · 19/03/2024 15:18

Costa Rica
Belize
Hawaii

Fairyliz · 19/03/2024 16:52

Just a word of warning; if you are doing all of these fabulous holidays they will definitely want to come with you well into their 20’s; it can get expensive!

Hiking might be normal, but we took our kids on the Inca trail. Peru was a phenomenal experience. We camped in the Amazon, cycled, rafted, hiked, saw sights, ate food, had a boat rides on lake Titicaca, stayed with a local family, just brilliant.

Other great trips- Indonesia to see the orangutans, Komodo for the dragons, Bali for volcanos

Iceland - in the summer it’s awesome

Cuba staying with families

Namibia self drive and safari

Sri Lanka

Does it have to be a big adventure far flung place type of holiday? We don't venture very far as DH absolutely will not fly anywhere. We go walking in Chamonix every year with DS (now 19) which is wonderful. Amazing walking and scenery. The last holiday we had before he went off to Grande Ecole in Paris was a late booking in a cheap gite in Normandy. Small non tourist town on the coast. We cycled a lot, great cycling paths there. Visited loads of museums of interest to DS. It was more about spending time together before he left than a bucket holiday tick list. One of the best holidays ever have ever had. Just a thought.

Squiillionaire · 19/03/2024 23:17

Not that all the other suggestions don't sound great. I think as DH won't fly I've come to appreciate other things on holiday rather than what has been suggested, I've had no choice 😁. That last holiday was special as it was just spending time with DS in a more low key place before he went away. Not that it is the last holiday with us mind. He is coming to Chamonix this year as usual.
