Pompeii or Herculaneum?

We have a short time in Naples in April and won't have time to do both. DCs are teens but one is autistic and can get overwhelmed by big crowds. I wondered if Herculaneum, being smaller, might be more manageable but perhaps we should bite the bullet and do Pompeii? Any thoughts please? I'm keen to get it booked but can't decide.

Both are busy. Pompeii is much bigger and has wider spaces - wider streets, big squares, temples etc. . Herculaneum has narrow alleyway type streets. Both are super. It's easier to get to pompei

Herculaneum is better IMO. Less crowded, more eerie and atmospheric. A real feeling of connection with the people who lived there. Much less touristy too.

Hi. Wondering what you mean by getting it booked op? I’m also off there soon…..

RunningFromInsanity · 18/03/2024 22:24

Pompeii.
Herculaneum is good but Pompeii is by far better. Especially if you have a guide who can explain and point out the important bits.

Pompeii is so big that there aren’t really big crowds just lots of smaller groups.

We went to Pompei in April and loved it. It wasn't too busy. We went in the morning. It's a really big site. You'll have a great time.

Herculaneum is very easy to get to from naples...it's at the bottom of the hill from the train stop, direct train from Naples central. We did vesuvius via coach trip from outside the same train station and then went to Herculaneum in the afternoon. Enjoyed Herculaneum, but haven't been to Pompeii to compare.

Didn't see this was in holidays and thought you were debating over baby names! Would love to visit pompeii one day though.

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 18/03/2024 22:29

We loved both, probably Herculaneum was a bit better preserved and was very interesting but if you can only do one Pompeii is the big dog, the OG, and it is huge, there's loads of it!

Herculaneum is only a couple of hours to do a fairly thorough visit.

Blahahahah · 18/03/2024 22:30

Ps apparently there is a banksy in Naples that I didn't realise was round the corner from where we sat and ate one day, only found out once we were back. Also found Naples pavements full of dog shit, so keep your eyes peeled!!

EmmaGrundyForPM · 18/03/2024 22:31

We stayed in Sorrento a couple of years ago and did both on different days.

We found both fascinating but, if I only did one, it would be Herculaneum. You get a real feel.of the town, whereas Pompeii is huge and you lose perspective.

We went in November so neither place was too crowded.

TheCadoganArms · 18/03/2024 22:33

Pompei is a much larger site and often much busier. Herculaneum is smaller but better preserved and as others have mentioned already much more atmospheric as you have more time alone on some of the streets.

Cassimin · 18/03/2024 22:33

Pompeii.
took our autistic son here, it has large spaces so you can avoid crowds.
Be aware that there is no shade there and it can get very hot.
Take plenty of water.
Great day out though, enjoy!

Stringagal · 18/03/2024 22:35

Herculaneum is more compact and overall better preserved, and can be done in half a day. There is a fabulous ice cream at the top of the hill near the train station.

Pompeii is much bigger and really needs a full day or more to take it all in properly and do it justice.

In your situation I’d go with Herculaneum, and look at going up Vesuvius while you’re in the area.

OneFrenchEgg · 18/03/2024 22:36

My neurodivergent teenagers found heraculaneum an awful experience, over heating, boring, tiny, crowded, nowhere to safely leave them - at one stage the younger one almost passed out (regular stress response) so we cancelled Pompeii for them and went alone. Pompeii definitely if only doing one.

I had just heard you should book in advance. Perhaps I'm being over cautious.

Pompeii definitely. Much more interesting. I was bored at herculaneum but blown away by Pompeii.

Curtainconundrum · 19/03/2024 18:57

Thanks for all the feedback everyone. It looks like Pompeii has the edge if we can't do both.

I went in the summer of 2022 with my young teens. We went to Pompeii first and they enjoyed it. But when we arrived at Herculaneum, which is 1/10 of the size, my teens were cheered: it seemed manageable. This meant they could appreciate the nuances.

As PPs say, it is a full day trip. Pompeii is as big as a modern city (for reference, it's the same size as Winchester). There was some shade and even some breezes, amazingly. The fountains are still flowing so you can refill water bottles easily. There was not a restaurant inside Pompeii like there had been in the early 2000s - I think this is a post-COVID change. We took packed lunches. There are several restaurants outside the various entrances but I don't think you can go in and out of Pompeii on a day ticket.

We found Herculaneum to be less busy and more chilled. There were plenty of people roaming around Pompeii when we were there but it wasn't crowded. Occasionally, lots of people would be walking a street at the same time.

So much depends on your DCs: are they interested in this sort of thing? Are you? If you are going just because you think you should you may find it hard going unless you do some research/learning beforehand.

WhereAreWeNow · 19/03/2024 22:37

There was a cafe in Pompei when we went in 2023 @tarheelbaby

For a terrible moment I thought this was a baby naming thread! 😂Up Popmeii, OP!
