Wardrobe for Maldives

MonkeyTennis34 · 17/03/2024 13:30

We're going for the first (and probably last!) time to the Maldives in October.

Apart from swimwear and snorkels!, what else should I think about packing?

Going with teens.

Just saw you’ve not had replies, hope this is still helpful!

I would take

flip flops - as the boardwalks/paths can get hot
lots of suncream, enough for the whole holiday as it is very pricey to buy more in the resort shop.
Any regular medication plus a few things for emergencies - imodium, nurofen, savlon, piriton, plasters.
beach cover ups for lunch or if you get burnt (hopefully not!)
definitely no heels
UV tops for snorkelling/watersports, ideally swim shorts too to avoid burnt bum
A cap or sunhat is a good idea
Books or kindle, card games
Tablets, headphones, there is often not much to do in the evenings
Chargers - Uk style sockets are surprisingly common so you may not need adapters, but check
Maybe spare sunglasses if you have them, as it’s a nightmare if they break or get lost
Mozzie repellent
Waterproof pouch for phone
If you are divers take your certification

If you are taking a seaplane watch out for the reduced luggage allowance

Enjoy!

Remember that it is a Muslim country. No need to cover up particularly in the resort but it can't hurt to be able to cover your knees and elbows if you find yourself in Malé. In the resort where we stayed, the waiters who served alcohol were Sri Lankan. Don't take duty-free alcohol in either.

Ha, just saw your post is entitled Wardrobe and I haven’t really mentioned clothes.

Daytime you’ll be in swimwear and cover up.

Evenings are quite casual, comfy linen/cotton stuff (a few people may dress up to the nines, honeymooners/instagrammers, but this isn’t the norm). Summery dresses or skirts/trousers and tops. A light cardi or jumper or two for if it’s breezy or rainy. Bit of jewellery to feel dressed up for dinner if you want to, but not obligatory.

It does rain in the evenings a fair bit, can be quite dramatic. Umbrellas usually provided in the room for getting to/from dinner.

The resort we stayed in had sandy, gravelly paths from our beach villa to the restaurants and main pool and I was glad to have shoes that could withstand getting a bit grubby as it rained at least briefly about 6 days of 10. This was in Nov/Dec. It was generally warm enough not to need a lot of layers in the evening but in one of the restaurants it was a bit chilly in the AC.

Yes! Definitely take some flip flops or other shoes that can be washed off easily.

Thanks all!

Good tip re the flipflops that I don't mind getting dirty!

We are going at the end of the rainy season so I'm keeping my fingers firmly crossed that it's not a wash out.
