Travel Company/agent or myself booking flights and hotel separately.

Also what is the tax, deposit they charge per day...keep seeing that mentioned

Have a look at British airways holidays. They often have good deals if you book flights and hotels together.

We got an amazing deal with British Airways that included flights. Hotel and breakfast.

DinnaeFashYersel · 15/03/2024 10:21

The 'tax' is mandatory resort fee that you need to factor in to your holiday cost.

It was $35 a day for us. Paid directly to the hotel - not to BA.

But we could spend it in the hotel in room service, in the shop. On coffees or in the bar.

You're confusing a resort fee with the actual taxes charged on hotel rooms in NYC.

Each room night is charged New York State tax of 8.875%, a New York City tax of 5.875%, a New York City Occupancy Tax of $4.00, and a New York State hotel unit fee of $1.50. This will all be included in the final total you see before you book.

Some hotels also charge a mandatory daily resort fee. Obviously this used to just be in resorts but now some hotels in big US cities also do it as a way of gouging more money out of customers and making their room rates look cheaper. They claim this fee covers things like 'free' wifi and access to the hotel gym etc. Often things which were free before and included in the room rate anyway. Or they give you a food and beverage credit back as part of the resort fee so it means you get tied in to using their bar/restaurant to use your 'credit'. Basically they want you money going to their hotel rather than elsewhere.

You can often resort fees by choosing a hotel that doesn't charge them but you can't avoid the taxes.

We booked flights and hotels separately but you can book with Virgin holidays, BA holidays or any other travel operator.

The fee - we had it in our hotel but we had credit in the hotel bar and ended up there after coming back from dinner. Yes, we could have gone somewhere else but with teen DD we didn't want to hunt down a bar she could come in as well.

@HundredMilesAnHour

Not confused. I was describing the resort fee which most people refer to as a 'tax'.

Many hotels charge an upfront deposit to your credit card in case you damage or trash the room.

I'm interested in this. I just looked at 4 nights in NYC with BA in October and it came up to more than £4000. That seems quite a lot for a short trip.

I've never heard anyone call a resort fee a "tax" in my 30 years of visiting and working in NYC so no idea who these "most people" are. 🙄Clearly people who don't understand what a tax is.

I really wouldn't! It's a horrible city now that absolutely REEKS of cannabis every bloody where and is utterly filthy & dangerous. Strongly advise you don't waste your money

HesterPrincess · 16/03/2024 18:15

We went via BA, and got a great deal on our hotel/flights. We went for the financial district as it was quieter and away from the madness. My DD went last year and they were horrified at the drug users on the streets and didn't feel safe around Times Square at all. They changed hotels after 2 nights. I'm not sure I'd go back now in total honesty - it seems a very different city.

We are just back from New York - booked through BA holidays. Yes to the $34 a day service charge which seems standard.

Also we did often smell cannabis which is a very strong and distinctive smell, but it wasn't everywhere. I didn't think the city was filthy at all, the subway was quite grubby admittedly but the streets weren't. And we didn't feel it was any more dangerous than any large city, we stayed in Midtown and there were lots of people about whatever time of the day or evening, and lots more NYPD on the streets than you'd ever see in London or Glasgow.

DGPP · 16/03/2024 18:51

BA or Expedia, always been happy with both

Didn’t find that all all last month. Yes weed but only in Times Square. Didn’t find it anymore dirty than any other major city and I actually didn’t feel unsafe at all.
