Does the perfect French spot exist?!

Looking at an early June trip to the south of France, travelling with a 3yo. H loves Cannes and wants to explore Nice and Monaco; I'm more interested in pine-backed beaches and gorgeous, rocky little coves for swimming. 3yo will be happy with croissants and some sand for castle-building. Does such a spot exist?! I've heard that the trains are great there, so bonus points if we can be near a well-connected station. And extra bonus points if we can be walking distance to a shop/some restaurants. I am aware this is perhaps a lot to ask!

Not fussed whether it's a private rental or hotel, although I do quite like the idea of a private pool. Fairly generous budget and we're looking to fly into/out of Nice.

TIA!

Villefranche sur mer? One end of the beach more sandy and great for kids. Lots of Rocky coves around for beautiful swimming but I think you would probably need a car to get to many of them. Will be much quieter (and nicer) in June!

also to add a lot of this part of the coast is very hilly! Worth thinking about with little one. When you say pine backed beaches I think of hyeres, fantastic beaches for kids. (But not near Nice)

I love Antibes - Plage Salis area is fab to stay as quiet and you've got the beach but easy walk into town or across to Juan la Pins. 45 mins in taxi from Nice airport, heaps of nice AirBNBs

And train station for day in Nice / Monaco / Cannes etc. Though Antibes much nicer then them imo!

Other lovely beach / town in south of France is Cassis - stunning pine backed beaches in the Calanques and Cassis lovely town. 20mins to Aix. You'd need to fly to Marsailles though.

San Peïre beach is an attractive family beach. There’s also Plage de la Petite Afrique which has pine trees, a decent play area and a rocky outcrop where we’ve been rockpooling. It’s not sandy, but the pebbles are very easy on the feet and smooth enough to feel like sand.

Thanks so much. I'm leaning towards Antibes, it looks like it has a few beaches that tick the boxes and really good connections for day trips.

Does anyone know if driving round there is awful? Verdon Gorge looks beautiful and I'm wondering whether a day trip out there is possible.

Yes do the Gorges du Verdon! It is a pleasant, easy enough drive from anywhere on the Cote d'Azur and is absolutely breathtaking.

Another vote for Antibes and the plage du Ponteil - stunning views and it’s sandy unlike quite a lot of the beaches nearby. Antibes old town is beautiful too and a nice walk along.

Saint-Cyr-Sur-Mere, la Madraque area. We got the train there.

Humphriescushion · 15/03/2024 06:58

Agree with Minnie above. I prefer this area. Bandol - sandy beaches, train, Sanary sur mer, Cassis ( prefer to visit not stay). Can drive to the Vernon gorge and is beautiful ( an amazing hikes!). Can walk to the calanques ( not sure about 3 year old ) but some you can drive to I think. Bandol is popular with the French. Marseille nearer for flying but doable from Nice. I am not keen on Cannes, Monaco ok for a day trip ( for me) and mixed on Nice ( lots to do, easy easy to get around to other areas ( cannes, Monaco etc, lovely town but don’t like the beach pebbly and sea not shallow has a steep drop from memory). As others also say if I had to chose this area would go for Antibes/Juan les pins.

For me it’s Bandol - am there this weekend have a holiday home there so happy to tell you more if you decide on this.

Mandelieu-la-Napoule - lovely beaches, good access to other places along the coast, the Chateau, lots of great restaurants. We have a home there and have holidayed there my whole life.

Gorge Verdon is beautiful but it's a good long drive from Antibes etc - over 2/2.5 hours. To be fair driving anywhere in that part of France takes time - it's extremely spread out! The only thing is getting in/out of the places like Antibes when it's busy. St Tropez, for example, is grid lock during summer months and I won't go there during the summer now (we have a place in Provence). June may not be as bad though.

If you go to the gorge you should also visit Moustiers so that's a long day. Although there's a fabulous hotel La Bastide in Moustiers if you fancied an overnight stay.

Any recommendations for a nice hotel or apartment with pool in the Antibes area please ?

Humphriescushion · 15/03/2024 10:00

@LadyEloise1 sorry i have never stayed in Antibes only Juan les pins. Hopefully others can advise.

In Juan les pins i stayed here hehttps://www.bellesrives.com/en/re once but was some time ago. Is pricey though, I had a deal off season.) I also stayed in a cheaper one but can’t remember name ( will have a search though). Hotel Helios always looked ok to me though as well.

Ah sorry @TiptoeTess but it is only rented out to friends and family.

LadyEloise1 · 15/03/2024 11:39

Thank you @Humphriescushion

Thanks so much everyone, all the places mentioned look beautiful. @HavfrueDenizKisi thanks for the hotel recommendation near Verdon Gorge – we may consider staying overnight as it's quite a lot of driving for one day.

@Humphriescushion Bandol looks gorgeous and I think we'll definitely be making return trips to France (so much to explore!), so I'll add this to the list for next time. H is very keen to be close to Cannes this time, so I think Antibes is the right choice. I'm very excited and daydreaming of warm summer days sipping ice-cold rosé, eating all the soft cheese and consuming my weight in baguettes!
