Easter eggs in suitcase

We fly to South Africa next week and will be there for Easter. My young children are already talking about the Easter bunny finding us on holiday. We do an Easter egg hunt of small eggs on Easter day (these are left by the Easter bunny). A larger egg from mummy and daddy are going to be left in UK to have when they come home. But need to have Easter Bunny egg hunt, I can buy these chocolate eggs in south africa so will buy them when there. But my youngest 2 children are dairy intolerant, I've looked but don't think I can get dairy free Easter eggs in South Africa, please correct me if wrong?! So thinking I will have to take a pack of dairy free eggs in a suitcase, will these be ok in my suitcase do you think? They won't melt??

Extreme temperature changes causes chocolate bloom in regular chocolate, but I have no clue if that happens in dairy free chocolate. You might be best to email the brand to check.

I took Easter abroad one year (small eggs in quite high volume to do an Easter egg hunt for 4 kids).

I took them in my/DH hand luggage to avoid damage/melting/bloom. I also thought they might look really weird on the luggage scanners, and it'd be easier to show/explain in hand luggage!

Do check the rules for importing food in to the country you're visiting. The country I went to had a weight limit for chocolate which I made sure to stay under, and I kept the eggs in their outer packaging so ingredients and weight were easily available.

I always put chocolate in my carry on as suitcases can sit on the tarmac for some time.

I regularly travel with lots of chocolate in a suitcase. For extra assurance pack in a cool bag right in the centre of the case. The hold of an aircraft is very cold so even when traveling somewhere really warm (SA at end of March isn't massively hot) it will survive intact to your destination.

We took small eggs with us last year when we went to Prague and I had them in my hand luggage. But that was just for one child.

I had chocolate in my hold luggage years ago when I flew to Singapore and the suitcase was really cold when I got it back, everything survived with no problems.

I would double-check the restrictions of food bringing into the country though.

FWIW the main aircraft holds vary to some degree (SWIDT) but the systems usually try to maintain them at a lowish room temp. They can be set to run a bit cooler if carrying stuff like some pharmaceuticals or food stuffs ..that said you can get cold areas/spots in parts of the holds on long flights.

IMHO the only time you'd probably see chocolate melting temperatures in the holds is if the aircraft has been parked up for a while at a very hot airport.
