Is £850 for 7 nights expensive?

Looking at going away for 7 nights to Greece or Turkey. Staying in a 4* hotel bed and breakfast. Need extra leg room seats as dh is 6ft 4.

Found a quote for £1,700 for a nice hotel, 4* in Greece on the beach, b&b, luggage, extra leg room. First week of September.

Dh said this is way too expensive and he expected it to come in at more like £500 each for a week.

i take it dh hasn’t booked a holiday to greece for last 10 years or so?

FunnyFinch · 12/03/2024 11:33

and even then…. it was a bit of a shit hole for £500

FunnyFinch · 12/03/2024 11:33

first week of september you’ll still be paying school holiday prices

Moier · 12/03/2024 11:36

We pay £500 for five nights self catering out of school holidays in an apartment ( 2 bedroom) or bungalow.
10 kg suitcase. No transfers we hire a car.
I'd be over the moon at that price ( not Turkey though.. food is horrible).

Waitingfordoggo · 12/03/2024 12:01

I disagree that Turkish food is horrible! Grilled meats and delicious salads, pide, su boregi… what’s not to like?

Deathbyfluffy · 12/03/2024 12:03

Your find sounds like a bargain!
You can get a holiday for £500 each, but it'll be something like the hotel in the first Inbetweeners movie.

I think his expectations are too high.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 12/03/2024 12:08

Oh dear, dh has no idea of holiday costs these days.

dd is paying £1200 for 4* A i in May /June ( school half term ) for 10 nights tho

a friend of hers has decided to go to Tenerife ( instead of a Greek island due to cost ) and is paying £550 for 3 " b&b in late Sept.

I have always found that 4^ abroad is just not quite the same as 4" in the UK.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 12/03/2024 12:18

Last year DH and paid £1100 total for week in Greece during October half term. DD and I went to Corfu for a week in mid July and it was £1200 half board for the two of us.

Both trips were booked within a couple of weeks of departure so we got last minute discounts. Your prices don't sound too bad to be honest as I've noticed things have gone up for this year.

DS is 6ft 5 and we never bother with extra leg room seats on a short haul flight. He survives once he stops moaning. We also don't bother pre booking seats. We don't mind not sitting toether on the flight.

caringcarer · 12/03/2024 12:19

Yes, 4 in Europe is often similar to 3 in UK so don't let him talk you into going 3* in Europe. It seems very reasonable to me. Your DH sounds rather dim. I bet he couldn't do any better. If you went the second week of September when the kids are back to school it would likely be cheaper.

BeaRF75 · 12/03/2024 12:20

Dear Lord, no. I'd be worried about what was wrong with the place for it to be so cheap!

ohtowinthelottery · 12/03/2024 12:33

I think your DH needs to spend some time browsing holiday websites and looking at prices!
My 6ft 4 DH never pays for extra legroom - even on Ryanair - but our last holiday with Jet2 had plenty of legroom in a standard seat.

You will find something cheaper if you want something cheaper, loads of bargains out there. You might just need to be a little more flexible. Ditch the extra leg room if possible, that will save a few quid (also have a tall partner but he just sucks it up for a few hours and walks around the cabin a bit.)
Easyjet holidays has some great deals for turkey (and egypt if you'd consider there,)
Or what about just booking an apartment an an getting your own flights?
Or... if you are happy with £1700, enjoy your lovely holiday!

Bettyscakes · 12/03/2024 13:11

We stayed in Rhodes, end Sept £900 b&b incl flights and transfers but that’s flying from Scotland! Hotel was lovely, 5 mins from beach.

Clearinguptheclutter · 12/03/2024 13:13

Sounds very reasonable
in fact possibly a bit too cheap- checkout trip advisor reviews
your dh clearly hasn’t booked a holiday in a very long time

GinnyWizz · 12/03/2024 13:28

Sounds good to me! I'm also guessing your DH hasn't been on holiday in a while....

Margaritavillee · 12/03/2024 13:36

That’s roughly what we paid for Greece as we needed extra legroom too. Your DH is being massively naive about prices. They’ve shot up. But £850 for 4* all inclusive, flights and luggage is pretty good

This a million times 😂We've just paid over £2,000 for 2 weeks self-catering in Greece in June (including flights). Last year we paid £1,200 for a week on Rhodes all-inclusive HOWEVER that was in the Black Friday sale and I got an absolute bargain as the price for the same hotel literally doubled as soon as the sale was over.

Holiday prices are obscene now. Generally speaking, going to Greece any time between May - Sept you're looking at minimum of £1,500 for a week for 2 people.

Chewbecca · 12/03/2024 15:52

We are going to Greece early July (so outside school holidays) and are paying €90per night for the room in a beachfront boutique type hotel. Our flights were about £200ph I think, plus we have hired a car.

I would have a look on booking.com or similar + flights.

Take no notice of of star ratings, all they refer to is facilities in the hotel, not standard or quality, e.g. do they offer room service.

GettingStuffed · 13/03/2024 21:07

Greece has seriously gone up in price. We've been looking and all inclusive is not much more expensive than b&b so we're looking at AI mainly for drinks and the odd meal

Anotherdayanotherdramaa · 13/03/2024 21:15

We've done Greece a few times, not the mainland but Rhodes, Zakynthos, Kos. We usually go the first week of September or the last week of June, 4* minimum (which we have found is VERY basic in Greece), bed and breakfast, within 5 minutes walk of the beach. Prices have gone up a bit this year but even so the places we looked at were £550-£650pp for those weeks.
We're not paying for extra leg room though, no idea how much extra that adds on.
I guess the airport you're flying from and the flight times will make a difference though, worth playing around to see if it's worth driving to a slightly further airport maybe.
We tend to fly out in the morning and back in the evening, from a London airport.

Crabwoman · 13/03/2024 21:17

I paid that for 4* B&B in Turkey 12 years ago.

Stompythedinosaur · 19/03/2024 12:52

That's a bargain, not expensive for a week. Only just only £100 a night.
