Cheap European City Break

Big birthday coming up and I'm wanting to go on a European city break with a friend in early October flying from Heathrow or Gatwick. We have done Barcelona and Paris. We would like somewhere easy to fly to direct that doesn't cost too much.

We just did Venice for £40 each return. Hotel was £350 for 3 nights. A bit expensive when there though. Are you on Facebook at all? There is a good page called Extreme Day Trips. It’s all about getting the best flights and not just for the day either.

Thanks @storagefilter - I'll take a look at that. Who did you fly with for those cheap flights to Venice?

easyjet.

I'd recommend going on Skyscanner and entering 'everywhere' as your destination - it'll give you the cheapest flights for your dates.

Rome is fantastic and there are affordable Airbnbs & hotels. Malaga is lovely for a relaxing holiday. I'd also recommend Madrid and Ibiza (it's not all loud and clubs!)

If you want a warm holiday, flights to the Canaries are surprisingly cheap and it's lovely year round.

Prague is reasonably cheap once you get there too

mitogoshi · 10/03/2024 20:58

Budapest isn't too expensive once you are there. Not ultra cheap but nowhere in Europe is

MissAmbrosia · 10/03/2024 21:04

Lisbon or Seville. 2nd what sarahb said about checking Skyscanner first. Then Booking.com

GuacamoleinmyDMs · 10/03/2024 21:06

Krakow

Isseywith3witchycats · 11/03/2024 19:05

Krakow a lovely medieval centre, river, castle, jewish quarter lots to do and reasonably priced

Palma is lovely. Choice of flights. Lots of accommodation options. Or Porto. Stunning city. Port tours. Great music scene.

Gdansk in northern Poland is amazing, flights when I went were £30. They're not in the Euro and everything is so cheap - good food and drink, lots of history and stuff to do.
Ljubljana in Slovenia is great too and you can book a trip to Lake Bled which is beautiful

ASighMadeOfStone · 12/03/2024 07:09

Prague, Budapest and Rome all really cheap once you're there. Lisbon a little bit more. Madrid is also fairly cheap but a bit less so. Florence more expensive, perhaps in line with Vienna. Brussels more expensive still.Venice much much more expensive than all the above.

(I do a lot of city breaks by grabbing a £30 flight and taking it from there)

Krakow, Warsaw, Budapest, Bucharest, Tallinn are all cheap/fairly cheap places to visit.

Or try somewhere a bit different, such as Tirana. My DS is going next month, and has been able to book a flight and apartment for two nights for around £50.

ShanghaiDiva · 12/03/2024 16:21

Vilnius?

wondabar · 12/03/2024 22:31

I'm going to take a look at all these. For those who take the £30 flights, are they from LHR or LGW? For the £30 flights, do you tend to fly direct?

Gatwick usually.

Skopje,North Macedonia is quite cheap. With the pound being strong against the Macedonian denar, it is easy to eat and drink well on the cheap. Cappuccinos can cost as little as £1.40 while street kiosks sell ice creams for less than 60p.
