Family city break ideas

snapdragongirl · 07/03/2024 11:50

I'm looking for idea for city breaks for me, DH and our 3 DCs (15, 13 and 9). I'd love Paris but DH isn't keen as goes there a lot for work. I wondered about Barcelona but was hoping you would all have some good suggestions based on trips you have done. We usually do cottage/villa type holidays but looking for a few days during the Easter holidays to do something a bit different to our usual....

Amsterdam is great, and Duinrell an hour away is a great place to stay with teenagers.(we drive there).

snapdragongirl · 07/03/2024 11:56

Thank you! Hadn't even thought of Amsterdam but this is a great shout. What activities do yours enjoy when you've been there?

It’s a while since we’ve been (pre-covid) so had a quick search and found these two articles. It’s a lovely city to walk around, soak up the atmosphere etc. (and wander into the red light district…).

You can drive, fly or I think there’s trains that go there now.

Totally hijacking - am thinking of taking DTs almost 13 going on 16 to Duinrell. Is it still good for that age / how long do you go for?

CormorantStrikesBack · 07/03/2024 12:23

Amsterdam is now supposedly one of the most expensive European cities to visit if that makes a difference.

everythinglooksbetterpaintedblack · 07/03/2024 12:35

Budapest or Berlin

Radiatorvalves · 07/03/2024 12:37

Berlin and Lisbon would be one son’s recommendation. The other would say Valencia or Rome.

Sunnnybunny72 · 07/03/2024 12:45

Have done Seville, Valencia, Rome, Barcelona, Copenhagen, Reykjavik, Vienna, Alicante, Malaga.
Palma next month. Lisbon and Dubrovnik on the bucket list.
Seville and Rome are my favourites.

Sunnnybunny72 · 07/03/2024 12:45

Oh yes, done Budapest too. Enjoyed it.

JustFrustrated · 07/03/2024 13:02

Rome.

It's easy enough to fill 2 days but much longer would be hard.

It's easy from the airport

Cheap when you're there.

NorthFaceofthelaundrypile · 07/03/2024 13:04

Prague, we were there for 6 days recently and always find so much to do.

everythinglooksbetterpaintedblack · 07/03/2024 13:04

@JustFrustrated you honestly couldn't fill more than 2 days in Rome ??? 😂😂

Mydogisagentleman · 07/03/2024 13:06

Seville

MrsMoastyToasty · 07/03/2024 13:06

The Hague. You could do Amsterdam at the same time.

Pieceofpurplesky · 07/03/2024 13:16

Krakow. DS loved it.

Pieceofpurplesky · 07/03/2024 13:18

He also loved Barcelona, Valencia and Brussels.

I think so. It has a good pool complex, and a theme park. I have family friends who go there year after year, and the youngest ‘children’ are now in their early twenties. It is also well located - Amsterdam isn’t to far away plus there are lovely sandy beaches nearby.

We went for a week and used it as a base for exploring the surrounding area. We went to the theme park and pool first thing or later in the day, when it was quieter.

Having just returned from there, I could if I dragged things out. But I hit the things I wanted to see, I'd spend more time drinking coffee and eating perhaps. And I will be going back with the children to redo some things properly.

But it's easier to do in a short space of time than say, Paris is

IceCreamplz · 07/03/2024 15:18

I would suggest Vienna. Beautiful city and lots to do, but not huge either

Opinione · 07/03/2024 15:48

We did Malaga with a pre teen and teen and we all loved it.

Cheap flights- as there's loads of flight options.
Quick transfer from airport
Beautiful city. Properly Spanish. V few English people around - I think people go straight from the airport to the likes of Benidorm!
Lots to see eg cathedral, Picasso museum, amphitheatre, gaming museum, fort, football match etc.
Beach in the city - really lovely clean beach and great for swimming
Nice weather
Lots of accommodation options, we did Airbnb
Amazing food and wine and v cheap to eat out
Easy to travel around- trains and busses up and down the coast and trips up to the mountains.

We also liked Seville, Grenada and Lisbon 👍

Stay in Pompei. Visit Pompei ruins, Herculaneum and Vesuvius.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 07/03/2024 19:18

We've enjoyed Paris, Nice/Monaco, Copenhagen, Belfast, York, Reykavik and we're off to Edinburgh at Easter. DC were 4 and 7 when we went to Paris, 12 and 15 for Reykavik and all other ages in between for the rest.

Retiredearly61 · 07/03/2024 19:23

Valencia, history, beautiful beach. City of arts and sciences (aquarium etc), zoo., Turia park. I loved it and it’s far less busy than Barcelona
