Have you ever done this?

No. What if your child is ill or injured on the trip? Would you be able to get to them?
It depends on what you have in mind really.

Yes. Ds went to one week long school trip. Dh and dd went to caravan in England and I flew to my home country. I think we were ok as Dh stayed in England. Ds was abroad.

LittleMonks11 · 07/03/2024 09:07

This is why I'm struggling.

I think a night or two away close to home but not abroad.

Child would be abroad.

Definitely not abroad. Something may happen and the kids all have to come home early. (I know two school trips that got cancelled halfway through due to bad weather conditions)

PuttingDownRoots · 07/03/2024 09:09

As long as there's still an emergency contact, its fine. Its going away without provisions tht cause a problem.

2chocolateoranges · 07/03/2024 09:10

I wouldn’t go abroad, just in case there was an emergency eg illness etc.

our child went on a week long trip to the highlands of Scotland, I honestly didn’t think she would last the week so we booked a breakaway dh & I) to a gorgeous hotel about 20 miles from where our child was staying for her last 4 days away. Just in case we had to pick our child up.

she didn’t need picked up and lasted the full week. She was 9.

LittleMonks11 · 07/03/2024 09:10

There would be provisions as family live nearby but I think I would just stress and it's not worth it.

As long as you can get back to pick them up should they need to cut short their trip then its Ok, we never did it as we had two DC never away at the same time but I know families of one DC who have.

FartingAgainstThunder · 07/03/2024 09:13

Absolutely, Go for it.

Have a couple of emergency contacts in place and/or choose to have your break somewhere you can easily travel to where your child is.
If they are in Spain and you are in Paris rather than at home in Edinburgh, I'm not seeing how that would be a problem.

museumum · 07/03/2024 09:13

I’d take a uk hotel break. So long as you are contactable and can get home faster than they could I can’t see the issue.

mynameiscalypso · 07/03/2024 09:13

How old are they? My family always went away when I was on a school trip abroad - often they were over a half term or in a week of the holidays

LittleMonks11 · 07/03/2024 09:14

I don't think it would be a pick up situation - it would be a repatriation situation or an everyone back situation as it's abroad.

But yeah - my gut says stay close to home.

Thanks all.

We did. Dc went to France and us to Italy for a few days. Easy enough to return if necessary.

RomainesToBeSeen · 07/03/2024 09:20

I would say it's fine to go away, even abroad, as long as it's somewhere that you can get back from easily.

Also depends on the age of DC, their experience of being away from home, and whether there are any additional needs/health problems.

Choose somewhere with plenty of flights back to the UK - this probably isn't the time to book a break on a remote Greek island with a weekly boat service to the mainland!

And if you have an emergency contact back in the UK that sounds great.

mirror245 · 07/03/2024 09:26

We haven't done it yet but dc planning on school ski trip next year for 6 days. They're our only dc. Dh and I will book an abroad city break/ beach break when they're away. We will make sure that where we go we can get a flight to dc as easily as we could from home should we need it.
