Fuerteventura- which resorts would suit us (winter 2025)

Looking for advice about where to stay in Fuertaventura, for Jan or Feb 2025.
Which places do you think would suit us best based on the following:

We'd want to be by the sea, love walking on or by the beach but wouldn't soend time lying on the beach so it can be rocky/volcanic etc.
Don't need nightclubs, but would want a choice of really good restaurants offering local food and a range of bars offering decent beer and cocktails. Like to stay somewhere that's busy and has a buzz,
My preference for this sort of holiday would be an apartment, although we'd want a decent sized pool so we can have a proper swim, often only found in hotels. This has ruled out smaller, quainter resorts on other holidays.
We're going mainly for some winter warmth, but would want to explore the island. Need resort to provide easy access to the rest of the island. (Suggestions for beautiful or interesting places to visit would also be welcome. )
We would wouldn't need a car the whole time and would want some flexibility about when we book it so a resort that is big enough to have car hire firms locally would be great.
We enjoy walking so being able to walk for an hour or so to another resort for lunch or to places of interest: for views would be nice, but not essential.

Just DH and I, no children with us.

All advice and info gratefully received to guide my googling! Thank you

Definitely you're gonna want corralejco myself and partner went there a few years ago and there was loads of things to walk to loads of different bars cafes and restaurants.

Anon543210 · 02/03/2024 11:38

Also if its just the 2 of you the Barcelo beach hotel is adults only has rave reviews and is central

Pieceofpurplesky · 02/03/2024 11:46

Corelejo would be my first choice - walking on the beach would mean a taxi ride out to the dunes though - but well worth it and cheap. It's a good base for exploring the north of the island.

Caleta De Fuste is not as pretty but more central. You can also hire a trike and explore the island which is great fun - I think it's called Cool Runnings

OMGitsnotgood · 02/03/2024 12:04

Great, thank you all much.

Any suggestions for other places to visit on the island? I'm just wanting to be sure we'd have be enough to do as friends have told us that there isn't much to do there, but then they prefer to spend most of the holiday by the pool so probably didn't look too hard! I enjoy a couple of hours by the pool, I can't spend all day sunbathing and like to spend some of the day out and about.

Thank you

A trip to Los Lobos
A buggy Safari
Cofete beach and Villa Winter
El cotillo
The national park.

There is a lot to see - even if the landscape is almost lunar. It's my favourite canary island as it's not as commercial as all the others.

Make sure you go and see the chipmunks 🐿️

OMGitsnotgood · 02/03/2024 12:49

Thank you @Pieceofpurplesky . The chipmunks would swing it for me!!

Try going to Fuerteventura as Fuertaventura doesn’t exist.

Definitely Corralejo for hotel/apartment, we’ve been three times and stayed either Alua Suites or Las Marismas, but were all-inclusive then as went with kids. Used Cicar for car hire each time, no problems at all and prices very reasonable. They have offices at the airport, one in the centre of Corralejo, and one at the port in Corralejo too. They can also drop off/collect car at your hotel/apartment too.

Places we’ve enjoyed visiting would be Los Lobos island (a walk along the port side and you’ll find plenty of tour boats, glass-bottomed one was great), El Cotillo, a drive (day trip) down to the very different beaches in Jandia, and up to the hills in Betancuria. Have a lovely time! 😎🍹

GB81 · 03/03/2024 07:19

Are you set on Feurteventura?
For me it is the worst of the Canary Islands, it is very barren and a lot of the island is inaccessible.
I went to Corralejo and thought it was a soulless place of fairly rubbish tourist bars and restaurants. If you want traditional tavernas etc I would avoid the 2 resorts.
It was a good few years ago though so maybe it’s changed🤷🏻‍♀️

Pieceofpurplesky · 03/03/2024 12:42

@GB81 we all like different things. I love the barrenness of Fuerteventura, the lunar landscape, the massive beaches and dunes - the wild wind.

Correlejo has some lovely bars and restaurants - a lot less touristy than the other canary island resorts!

PatriciaHolm · 03/03/2024 12:51

We enjoyed the cheese museum ;-) and the salt museum was also fascinating. We stayed in Corralejo which does have some lovely restaurants - Bar Gilda was great tapas. Betancuria is worth a visit too.

Driving around is easy enough, the roads were either absolutely great (the main ones) or terrible though (the smaller country ones!). We had a 2 seater convertible though so possibly not the best vehicle ;-)

Airfixkitwidow · 03/03/2024 13:10

Off to Correlejo tomorrow. We go twice a year to the Secrets Hotel. It's adult only and just outside the main part of correlejo but on the beach. There is a lovely walk into town along the beach or you can go the other way to the grandes playas. We walk into town and back every evening. A completely relaxing and luxurious holiday.

stargazer02 · 03/03/2024 13:20

Always Correlejo for us too (though with young kids and chronically ill adult we go all inclusive, so can't speak to restaurants) Nice walk along an ok beach (parts are like popcorn!) and the water there is good for paddleboarding etc, or you can get a bus/taxi to a nicer one. There's day trips by boat to a nature reserve island Los Lobos or to Tenerife.

We stayed at Alua Suites which is a bit out of the town. Nice and quiet.

stargazer02 · 03/03/2024 13:55

Just realised I said day trip to wrong island - i meant Lanzarote not Tenerife!

OMGitsnotgood · 03/03/2024 14:40

Thank you for all your input, very helpful.

@GB81 no, not absolutely set on Fuerteventura but haven't been there before so would like to try somewhere different. Haven't been to Tenerife either.

So I can gauge your views against our tastes, which are your preferred resorts in Gran Canaria and Lanzarote - and why; and what do you prefer about Gran Canaria and Lanzarote compared to Fuerteventura- that would be very helpful. Thank you

Definitely Corallejo, I think the other resorts are much quieter. We enjoyed a day trip to Lanzarote and would have been just as happy in Playa Blanca. I've also been to Gran Canaria many times and tbf they are all quite similar, you can't really go wrong if you enjoy walking, eating and swimming.

Another vote for tapas at Gildas in Corralejo

TheBackingSinger · 03/03/2024 14:47

Corralejo.
Been many times though only in summer, I usually go to Lanzarote in winter. There are no party resorts on Fueterventura but Corralejo is a busy place full of restaurants.
The island is small and easy to get round.
Have you been to the Canaries in winter before? It's likely to be warm and sunny but windy. It's never not windy. You could be unlucky and get rain and cloud. It's also cool in the evening so pack something warm just in case.

I like Playa Blanca and Puerto Del Carmen in Lanzarote and Costa Adeje in Tenerife.

OMGitsnotgood · 03/03/2024 15:02

@TheBackingSinger thank you. We've been to Lanzarote and Gran Canaria in winter and have been really lucky with the weather. We actually had more rain and cloud the one time we went at Easter. Appreciate it can be changeable. Sweaters / jackets taken for the evening but often taken off once we've started walking!

@OMGitsnotgood Same here. Our worst week ever was in April and the best was this January when we had perfect weather. It's just luck.

Pieceofpurplesky · 04/03/2024 18:03

I only liked Puerto De Morgan in Gran Canaria, Maspolomas was OK. Other resorts not my bag. Have not been to Lanzarote (prejudiced by a friend who goes to party and it always sounds like my worst nightmare - I am sure there are lovely bits)

I’ve only been to Gran Canaria once, last year. I was really surprised. We stayed near Meloneras, nice beaches and good bars/restaurants. We met family whilst there who were in Puerto de Mogan, if we returned to GC I would stay there.
I’ve been to Playa Blanca on Lanzarote, I really don’t have a lot of good to say about it. Very very average.
It’s a few years since I’ve been to Tenerife, we used to have family that lived near Los Gigantes but the All Inclusive hotels killed the hospitality businesses, very sad to see. If I went back I’d probably go to Costa Adeje.
