Multigenerational holiday suggestions

My husband will be 50 this year and we would like to do a special holiday to celebrate. Travellers will include my 76 year old mum (who lives in India. She has a UK visa but will need a visa for other countries. She is too old for more than a minimum level of travel insurance) and my 12 year old DC (who is OK with most things but likes having time and space to chill with his console and YouTube). My husband loves driving and visiting places. He views time chilling in the hotel as a waste of time. To give you an idea, our last holiday was to Scandinavia and involved staying in 5 different cities on a 10 day holiday. Mum did not accompany us that time.

We have 7-8 days this time and the budget for 3 of us (including everything) is about £10,000. Mum pays her own way. We have considered a cruise but am concerned Greece will be very hot in August and also that mum's insurance won't be enough. Have already done a Norwegian fjords cruise.

Any ideas will be gratefully received.

Cruise, if its too hot go inside at the hottest time of the day like the locals do

Switzerland? Really beautiful and won't be too hot in the mountains.

Wherever you go I'd be concerned about your mum's minimal insurance - what if she were to fall ill and need medical treatment? It might be a very expensive way of saving money.

I think a cruise would be good, but do look into the insurance for your mum (and the rest of you!). It's vital to have really good, cruise specific insurance, as medical emergencies on a cruise can run into the £1000's. But it is possible, my 91 year old mum has been on several cruises, and had no problem getting insurance - I think it was through Saga. Not cheap though.

Thank you for your thoughts. Unfortunately since she is not a UK resident, I can't find any UK companies to insure her. And the companies in her country (India) only cover seniors for about 50,000 USD which would not be enough if she fell ill on a cruise. A Europe land trip would be better as at least there would be less chance of helicopter evacuation etc. We are looking into Switzerland but we have been before as has she so more ideas welcome. Thank you.

Since travel insurance seems to be an issue, would somewhere in India be an option?

What about a European river cruise, e.g. Danube?

GettingStuffed · 28/02/2024 16:17

If visas and insurance are a problem I think you best option is to stay in the UK. There are plenty of lovely areas to visit ranging from cities like Bath or York , beautiful national parks

River cruise, perhaps the Rhine with a stay in Switzerland at the end?
