Hotel resorts in Malta, good choice?

Apologies. Posting in AIBU for traffic.

Anyone holidayed in Malta?

We are planning to travel in August to Malta. We have not visited here before and have not heard very much about it either.

I would be grateful for recommendations for a nice hotel/resort for families that offers half board or all inclusive.
Also suggestions of interesting activities for an adult and 2 DDs - 8 and 12 yrs.

But why @TenQLord do you need to post in AIBU for "traffic"..

...when Mumsnet's own Holidays board has 30 active topics running with replies from today !

https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/holidays

YABU - this area of the board isn't "Mumsnet".

I thought it wsa place where people ask specific questions to understand if they're being unreasonable, or others are, in life's dilemnas and circumstances.

It's making it really tough for me to actually scroll through and find the AIBU dilemnas to contribute to, because of this kind of post.

St Julian's is a good spot to base yourselves in, as lots going on. Excellent and cheap public transport on the island, including from the airport, so no need for taxis. August is very hot! Maybe look at the Jet2 offerings and the latest reviews, as finding that hotels and chains seem to be taken over all the time and what's good one year, not so much the next. Great island for children and an island with a great deal of history, although one suffering from development too.

We had a wonderful holiday at the Westin Dragonara, I'd claim it to be one of the best hotels we've been to with children. It was just perfect in every way.

Just outside the hotel is a place called paceville, it was a bit Magaluf like but can very easily be avoided.

We never go back to the same place but will certainly be returning here.

Be ready for super warm temperatures in August

@YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME @NisekoWhistler
That's great.. thank you.
It helps to hear from people who have been there.

@NisekoWhistler , what was it about Westin Dragonara in particular? Did they activities specially geared towards children? Or a swimming pool area with slides etc?
Many thanks in advance.

We went to Malta in August last year and stayed at the Raddisson Blu in st Julian's. To be honest I would never go back to Malta. The hotel was lovely but it was so hot on the island and seemed to have building work going on wherever you turn. St Julian's was not nice-we love to walk around the town in the evenings on holiday but my teen dds got so much hassle from the local men that it felt quite uncomfortable and a little threatening. I even found Valletta and Sliema quite unappealing. It made me realise just how beautiful Majorca, Menorca etc actually are in comparison. You may have more joy in other parts of the island but I would avoid St Julian's and prepare for it to be very hot.

I’ve recommended db Seabank resort in Mellieha Bay on a thread before. Went years ago with the kids but I believe it’s still good. You have access to a sandy beach opposite (rare on Malta) with loads of fun water activities. Gozo is close for a day trip.
Food was great and rooms have a separate partitioned off room for children. Huge outdoor pool and loads of activities. It will be boiling in August as others have said but we managed!

The rooms were large and very well decorated. Lobby and bar area was lovely. Breakfast selection was vast and delicious. A kids club (we didn't use it much as my son is 7) a great pool and then a deck area which allows you to jump into the sea, no sand to content with but right on the Med - perfect!

Thank you. It does sound lovely. DC would love being able to jump into the sea.

We stayed at the George Boutique in St Julian's. There is the George to so be careful to get the right one

TenQLord · 25/02/2024 21:35

Is Mellieha as busy and lively as St Julian? Does it has lots of restaurants, easy access to taxis and variety of shops?

OP posts:
Thelondonone · 25/02/2024 21:40

We stayed at the Corinthian at George’s bay, nice breakfast, rooms were nice with a big balcony and more sun beds than you can shake a stick at so no need to get up at 6am. Great access to water sports and swimming in the sea for snorkelling. 5 minute walk to st Julian’s bay.

Cheshiresun · 25/02/2024 21:48

Avoid Mellieha bay, specifically DB Seabank. Loads of traffic. Small, packed, man-made and not very appealing beach. Not much there. Boring. Hotel repetitive food, same 3 songs in restaurant. Diabolical entertainment.

Also was a lot of noisy and dusty road works when we went a couple of months back . Wouldn't return to Malta because of there, it has totally put us off, but perhaps the Capital is better.
