Particularly would like to do a walking tour but a small group - not a crowd! Also best Port lodge to visit. Thank you!

Do Norte cafe for breakfast/brunch. You can't book this but won't be disappointed. There is no website but there is an Instagram page.

There was a thread on here last summertime where posters gave a lot of recommendations. It's worth looking for.

Also, make sure you make your evening reservations well in advance.

We visited the Caves Calem for a tour of the port house and tasting. I recommend that.

Porto one if my favourite cities.

We loved do Norte !
we went to Taylor's, it was fab.
if you are into food the Michelin ** Casa da cha da boa nova is incredible food with a view to match
6 bridges cruise is fab
take one of the vintage trams
livrario lello followed by an ice cream next door or a couple of glasses of wine at Mind The Glass, a bar just round the corner that sells lots of wines by the glass. We really liked it there, was by our apartment. They do a nice cheeseboard too.

We did this tour - ask for Lenor. She was amazing. We were the only people on the tour. It includes 2 port drinks. The first we weren’t keen on but the second which was in the hill side bar looking at the sunset was lovely. Cheap as chips too.

We indulged in lots of fresh Portuguese tarts. We even had them for breakfast. We liked to Gaia side and visited a few port houses along the riverside. All of them good. We did the 6 bridges cruise which was fine for an hour. Again this came with a port tasting after which was actually very good. The tasting was in a restaurant we would have walked passed otherwise.

rookiemere · 23/02/2024 07:23

Oh enjoy, we loved Porto.

We actually did a couple of Port house tours and tasting, was good to compare and contrast.

If you like steak and are able to get a table Muu is excellent.

If the weather is good be sure to enjoy some Porto tonics in the sun.

Don't miss the cable car. The main rail station is impressive too. Nice soapy souvenirs from Castelbel make good presents.

fussychica · 24/02/2024 08:49

Don't forget a brolly and a kagool. Our trip at the end of Feb a few years ago was a total washout. We had booked a walking tour on the first morning but the rain was so bad we were soaked to the skin just walking to the meeting point.
I'm sure you'll be luckier than us weather-wise. Enjoy.

AndThatWasNY · 24/02/2024 09:01

Are there nice areas to stay?

Papyrophile · 25/02/2024 18:05

Avenida da Boavista is the upmarket centre of Porto. There are nice streets down towards the coastal fringe of the city, but they will be more expensive, I'd guess. Esposinho about 15km south of Gaiaia is a pretty resort town, but do not be tempted into the campsites and tourist fleapits to the north between Porto amd the airport. It looked eally rundown although I can't say that totally truthfully as it is clearly a summer holiday place and we went in early May when everything was shut/ nothing was open. Lovely beaches and probably great for family holidays in peak summer.

I'm Portuguese (albeit from Lisbon), but one of my favourite places in the world is Livraria Lello, in Porto.

Absolutely worth a visit.

elizabethcharlotte · 25/02/2024 18:22

Book your restaurants for dinner. We went in august and really struggled to get into any restaurants in the evening.
We booked a free walking tour and loved it. You paid what you wanted to pay at the end.

Jungfraujoch · 22/03/2024 11:57

Update! Loved loved Porto! We did a walking tour which took us right into the oldest part of Porto, a Pastel de Nata cookery class, Cockburn’s port lodge and 6 bridges boat trip. Plus lots of walking - discovered the beautiful train station and the Livraria Lello. The undercover market was fab for a mooch too. And a Porto Tonic is my new go-to drink 😁

Oh and the old tram out to the coast which was glorious!

Glad you enjoyed it @Jungfraujoch . We also very much enjoyed the porto tonics - I don't like gin so it's a particularly good option for me - sadly they don't taste as good in rainy Scotland !

Hello @Jungfraujoch , we're going in May, can you tell us a bit more about the tram? Would like to be able to get to the coast easily.

Thanks

Only takes about 20 mins along the river - I saw a beach area which I think was protected from the Atlantic - it can get quite rough!
