Switzerland, but not skiing

DH and I have a big anniversary coming up, and are torn between a chaotic New York holiday, or a relaxing holiday in (possibly) Grindelwald in Switzerland.

has anyone been in March/April and is there much to do. We like going for hikes, but not every day.

Plenty to do! We took the train up to the Top of Europe and the 3 cable cars to Shiltorn. Explore Murren and take the Allmendubel funicular. Take the train to explore Wengen. The views are different at each place even though they're all really close together! Lake Brienz is breath taking. Sledging. Oh and choose a spa hotel - we stayed at the Hotel Aspen which has a stunning heated outdoor pool accessed from inside and right at the foot of the Eiger with staggering views. One of the most beautiful places i've ever been. I'd go there over NY any time but that's just me!

Good area for non skiing. Lots of pedestrian accessible lifts and trains , sledding and cleared paths. Otherwise would suggest one of the longer train journeys like Glacier Express.

There is plenty to do - but the weather can be a bit like the Uk in March. Or snow. Or it could be lovely.

We've been to Grindelwald several times and like it a lot, but in March/April it will be neither one thing nor the other. There will be people trying to squeeze in a bit of late-season skiing on dodgy snow (Easter is 31 March) but it won't yet be warm enough for a reliable mountain springtime holiday. You could have several days of cloud and slush.

Our current lesser-known place in that part of the world (OK, not really the Alps) is Bergamo. It's a big Ryanair hub so flights are dirt-cheap but the town is wonderful for food and walking, and you can get to Milan in about 90 minutes for some bright lights.

I stayed at the Cambrian in Grindelwald with a friend in November a few years ago but not for skiing. Hotel was amazing, lovely to relax in that pool. Also visited a few local tourist places and took the lift up to the top of the slope. Had a great time.

I also have a friend who stayed at the Cambrian in the summer and also loved it too. It's a beautiful place.

Sorry it was Adelboden where we stayed, not too far from Grindelwald!

I don't ski but have been to Switzerland several times. I love it. Stunning scenery, walks in nature or through the village window shopping, stopping off for coffee and cake and amazing spas around! The tourist infrastructure is really well organised which you can imagine, in Switzerland.

Really easy to get around, the trains are superb (and always on time to the minute) and great views.

I've also spent time in Zurich and Geneva, loved the buzz of them. And very clean too, bliss. Underneath the stations are a whole shopping centre, very handy.

The Italian part is still on my bucket list so thanks for the info @samarrange.

We used to go to Zell am See every summer for years. Ski resorts are fabulous in the summer

Thank you all. Sounds idyllic. Didn't realise Italy might be a day trip option!
