WWYD as a tennis fan and a New York obsessed layperson-August trip to combine with US open or a cooler month to enjoy the city!?

Need advice wise people!!!

New York is my favourite place EVER! Not been for ten years and desperate to go back. We have the opportunity to go next year but we're limited to school hols as it's easier for amazing DM to have the children then!

DP (never been) has suggested we go in August and combine with a session at the US open (I think it would end up being 2nd or 3rd round as we'd be going end of august/early sept). As much as I would LOVE that I think the weather in August would spoil the rest of the trip. I'm aware it gets very hot and humid and I worry it would mean it's less enjoyable than going in say May or October! But the chance of going to the US open is just amazing! It's for a big birthday of mine so DP says I have final say!

So, WWYD, and has anyone been to New York in august and found it ok!? There's a couple of threads on here but predominantly people are saying it can be pretty unpleasant in August and I'm not overly good with heat! Thank you xx

GOD KNOWS why and how the word layperson has ended up in my title!?!?! That shouldn't be there! X

I lived there many moons ago and always managed to survive summer. And much easier to get good restaurant bookings when the city is quieter over summer.

As a tennis fan I vote summer.

NewYorkDilemma · 18/02/2024 20:29

@Businessflake thank you! I read on another thread on here that New York in August tends to be very busy with tourists! Would you say that's not the case? Both times I've been previously it was in February and the last time it was SO cold it spoiled it! X

Fellow tennis fan and lover of New York here - I say if you love tennis, do it! I'm not great in the heat and did a trip to New York for the US open plus lots of sightseeing a few years ago. I don't recall feeling it was too hot for me or too humid, whereas I do have the most amazing memories of watching Kyle Edmund beat John Isner as the sun set behind Louis Armstrong court.

I think it actually was mostly quite hot, with a couple of days of it being cooler and rather windy, but honestly didn't find it too humid for me, though I had also heard it can be. I did get a bit hot and sweaty from walking lots in heat on sightseeing days, so I tended to head back to the hotel for a shower and to change before heading out for late ish dinner. On one of my days at the tennis I spent time on Grandstand court on a seat without shade, and I did feel really quite hot then, but away form the tennis I used my usual tactic of walking on the shady side of the street.

I've done NYC in August, also for the US Open - definitely worth it!

A few days were really humid, then a huge downpour and it was then beautiful weather. Not that much different to London in summer in the end. Stores etc all have AC so it was fine, though it may depend on what else you want to do.

Make sure you book a hotel with good air conditioning - that would be my biggest tip!

NewYorkDilemma · 18/02/2024 21:13

@lovehatesummer thank you! Yes I'm wondering whether we'd be able to do all the walking around/subway journeys/being outside I'd want to do if it was really humid! I don't want to end up in museums the whole time lol x

One of my best memories from the trip (apart from the US Open itself) was sitting in Madison Square Park in the sunshine watching the tennis on big outdoor screens! It was truly gorgeous weather some days.

I would perhaps pick somewhere central to stay to minimise the subway journeys. Weather can be so variable though so I know it's difficult to decide!

NewYorkDilemma · 18/02/2024 21:57

@lovehatesummer I know and we're not going to be able to go again for such a long time so want to get the trip just right especially as DP has never been! I just wish the US open was in a milder month! I don't know how they're able to play in that heat either!!!! X

We went late August for the first time. It was gorgeous. Clear and blue skies and we walked so much. The first day was b humid but after that cleared it was better but 28-32 c. We stayed downtown so had the river to cool off by in the evenings and we were very grateful plus the boat rides were really a blessing. We managed to cycle around Central Park . I think I’d prefer it cooler but I’m not great in high temperatures.

43ontherocksporfavor · 18/02/2024 22:04

Plus we avoided subways as the heat down there was unbearable but the buses are air conditioned and you can see out!

@43ontherocksporfavor thank you! X

I wouldn't do August unless you're good in the heat and humidity. I went in early July once and found that uncomfortably hot and just walking a few blocks was exhausting even though I can happily walk miles normally. No way I'd go in August personally.

NewYorkDilemma · 18/02/2024 22:36

@Zippedydoodahday yes that's my concern! I love sunshine but I'm a sit in the shade on holiday person rather than a sunbather!!!!! X

I think you'd be fine, especially around the end of August and beginning of September (around Labor Day).

mathanxiety · 18/02/2024 23:10

July is the hottest month in NYC.

mynameiscalypso · 18/02/2024 23:12

I worked in New York over July and August and it was absolutely fine. Probably better than being in London as most places had better A/C. The US Open is fantastic, especially the night sessions

VestPantsandSocks · 18/02/2024 23:21

Please check your USA visa requirements before booking as currently the first available visa interview slots are in mid July!

DibbleDooDah · 19/02/2024 09:12

@VestPantsandSocks Most U.K. travellers are eligible for an ESTA to enter the USA - no visa required.

HarrogateHouseSale · 19/02/2024 09:14

We were staying at The Barclay last summer when the tennis was on - hotel was full of players and coaches- with a fleet of cars outside to whisk them away.

43ontherocksporfavor · 19/02/2024 13:28

I found a hand fan very useful and also tissues to pat yourself down if walking lots. We just dived into a shop if it got too much.

Clearinguptheclutter · 19/02/2024 13:31

Not August but have been to nyc in very hot weather in September
is ok as you can easily escape into pretty much anywhere for AC.

Better time than in mid winter when it was unbelievably cold

NewYorkDilemma · 19/02/2024 16:34

@HarrogateHouseSale oh wow! Was that in queens or Manhattan or elsewhere!? X
