Holiday inspiration - good public transport

I wouldn’t travel with my baby without them being in a car seat on a coach or taxi and I also won’t hire a car seat. This seems to rule out a number of holiday styles until we can take a HBB which folds up with us. This is ok for me overall as I’m not generally too keen on AI resort holidays every time we go away. I would want a holiday where we either can drive there or we don’t need vehicles when there such as city breaks where the public transport network is good from airport to destination.

can you please suggest some places to me? I was thinking Copenhagen for instance is a good option, very child friendly and easy to get about on public travel sport. Where else can you recommend? Is there somewhere which would be sunny and have a beach though? Can be anywhere really just needs to be possible to do without compromising on the car safety

We’d be away October time too if that influences it. Additionally I cloth nappies and so somewhere where we’d get good accommodation with a washing machine is a must. Eurocamp has been good for this from experience and airbnbs would work too

We went to the Netherlands with our baby and visited several cities by train. It’s flat and pram friendly too. I’m sure you could find an AirBnb or similar. We stayed in Leiden as it was quite central and cheaper and quieter than Amsterdam.

You could also consider hiring a car from the airport and bring a seat with you ( free with most airlines) if you want more freedom. Doesn’t have to be your main one. We are thinking of buying a seatbelt fitted one just for travel.

We've plumped for Vienna for September. I also cloth exclusively and our second child will be three months by the time we go away. Public transport looks fantastic there. Obviously not a beach place though!

When my son was 18 months and still in nappies we did Bologna and the surrounding Emilia-Romagna cities by train which was an absolute breeze. We found the bus and train network there to be quite reliable. For a beach day we went to Rimini which was a lovely town.

We've also clothed in Granada using launderettes! Bit more of a pain in the arse than having your own machine like we did in Bologna but still doable.

I salute your commitment by the way! :) I've not met many people who stick with it abroad.

Nice airport has a regular tram service into the centre. Also great train links to nearby coastal towns.

Valencia in Spain is a nice destination in October and it has a few metro lines, one of which goes out to the airport.

Just back from Valencia- would tick all your boxes Smile

Vienna is definitely not beach but you can swim in the Old Danube. Google Alte Donau. It has lake, beach type areas, water sports and is readily accessible by public transport from the city centre.

Boymum2104 · 17/02/2024 07:57

Might not be helpful but on most airlines you can check a car seat in free of charge

TheBirdintheCave · 17/02/2024 08:27

@Notsoadmirablecrichton I did look into that but with a three month old we figured it would be better to have our own pool instead so booked an apartment with one 😁

Malaga in Spain is good or the coastal resorts along from there Fuengirola, Torreblanca, Benalmadena.

There is a train service which runs along from Malaga to furengirola and is very frequent and cheap.

itsgettingweird · 17/02/2024 08:29

Train also runs from the airport.

We have been to Rome, Barcelona, Florence, Berlin, via plane with our baby. All were very easy on public transport, first trip we brought the car seat as we wanted to get a cab, but the rest we didn’t bother. We have also been all over France in our own car and that was easy.

We always get an airb with a washing machine so we can get everything in one bag.

FriendlyNeighbourhoodAccountant · 17/02/2024 08:35

Berlin was fantastic for public transport including a train from the airport.

soupmaker · 17/02/2024 08:43

Berlin is brilliant public transport wise.

We did Amsterdam with our smallest at 7 months. We had a couple of baby carriers. I wore her on me from the airport in our taxi so she was belted in.

FinallyFeb · 17/02/2024 08:47

I found the trains in South of France very good and cheap too.

Yes ds went to Berlin for a swim comp and they travelled around using trams easily (when they couldn't be bothered to hang around!) as well as the comp buses

Malaga. Very quick and easy from the airport to the city on public transport.
We stayed in this flat which was fantastic - it has a washing machine and is quiet but central. The bed is comfortable and the bedroom gets completely dark, which was important for our toddler. They arranged a cot for us and it had a proper mattress rather than the thin pad that travel cots normally have. There is a beach walking distance away and plenty to see in the city.

LimoncelloSpritz · 17/02/2024 12:14

Nice and neighbouring towns are super easy by public transport. Trains, buses and trams galore. And cheap.
