We want to go away at Easter just myself and DH. My DH can not walk far and can not manage being in jolty vehicles, so a jeep safari ride is out.
We want to go away for a week to somewhere easy, but with plenty to see, ideally wildlife, scenery or historical sites, or a mixture.
What works best in Britain is driving places where we can park outside. So the US is brilliant for us, but too far for just a week.
We used to do quite challenging unusual holidays, so we are finding it really hard to find interesting places that are accessible without too much work. Thanks.

You aren't going to see much wildlife without a flight of 6 hours or more.

Have you thought about a cruise? Yes, aspects of it might remind you of your age, but when I tried it (at partner's insistence) I found it wasn't nearly as bad as I had imagined. There are all kinds of price and luxury levels, from £500 to £3,000 pp/week. If you go somewhere like the Mediterranean you can wake up in a different town each day and either see the sights, go on a excursion (often a bit pricey, though), or rent a car to drive to the local beauty spots.

A cruise somewhere like China or alaska would be great, but we would both be bored cruising around the Mediterranean. I have looked at the options and the ports they stop and it really does not appeal.

In that case I think that your limit of a week (and/or a short flight) is going to stop you from going anywhere very special.

Iceland has some nice scenery, and most of the circular road around the island is tarmaced (tarmacked?), so not too bumpy. But there's no wildlife and not many historical sites.

Norwegian cruise? Plenty of wildlife

TizerorFizz · 14/02/2024 19:08

@herewegoagainy Have a look at Noble Caledonia for ideas but you won’t get much availability this close to sailing. Cruising to China is fairly unusual!

We are cruising round Iceland in 2025. It gets booked up! Norwegian cruising on a big ship won’t elicit much wildlife. You need much smaller expedition ships. We have also been around the Hebrides on an expedition boat - lots of birds!

You might like bear watching in Slovenia or Finland. Wildlife Worldwide offers this. Most wildlife holidays are off the beaten track. For obvious reasons. You might like The Rockies in Canada or Vancouver Island. Hire a car and meander! We are going to Nova Scotia later this year and that’s a pretty relaxed holiday too. We are hiring a car but not going too fast from one hotel to the next!

You could try Hurtigruten ships. Or what about River or canal cruising in Europe? That’s not much walking.

herewegoagainy · 14/02/2024 19:13

Bear watching in slovenia is a good idea, I will look at that.
We have been to Iceland and the Rockies, both are brilliant. And we have done a cruise in China on a small boat. But we only have a week at Easter, we can not take any longer.
And it does not have to be wildlife. It can be scenery.

You could try South of France and hire a car. I think Easter is early for cruises in Norway. . What about Ireland?

herewegoagainy · 14/02/2024 19:20

@TizerorFizz I have looked at carcassone as it looks lovely. I think we would need to hire a wheelchair though. France does look lovely. We did a long walking holiday in Ireland years ago and I think it would just be quite sad going back as DH could not go so many places we loved back then.

Cyprus? Paphos has historical sites in and close to the town. Nice temperature. Could hire a car for a day in the mountains.

TizerorFizz · 14/02/2024 23:36

I think Carcassone is hilly and medieval. Nice is flat. The train goes along the coast. You can drive into the hills and find a lunch spot. It’s not too strenuous.

what about the Highlands or Ireland for stunning scenery and history

SnakesAndArrows · 15/02/2024 07:33

Another suggestion of the Hurtigruten. Fly to Bergen, Hurtigruten to Tromso, fly home again. The ship stops in multiple ports a day, sometimes only for 15 mins, because it doubles as a mailboat. There are several trips to go on during the long stops, all suitable for the less mobile. It’s fascinating watching the activity in the ports, aside from all the amazing scenery. And there’s a chance of Northern Lights still.

My parents are doing a cruise around Japan next spring. On a luxury boat I think

TizerorFizz · 15/02/2024 08:10

@Chocbuttonsandredwine There are cruises around Japan - there might be to China but I’m just not aware of them.
