Where to go in August for sightseeing that's NOT hot but pleasantly summery

Everywhere seems blistering. Not a poolside type holiday but we want to see things and visit places. Cities are good, and also bonus points if there's a scenic train ride to go on at some point. Long haul is fine. For a large group of people of all ages from 12 upwards.

Copenhagen, Stockholm, Oslo, Helsinki?

drinkwithanumbrellainit · 13/02/2024 16:51

Agree Scandinavia. I did Stockholm in August when pregnant and couldn't face heat and it was great.

fightingthedogforadonut · 13/02/2024 16:52

Agree with previous poster that Scandi cities are probably a good bet. I've been to Helsinki in July and it was 19 degrees, which was perfect for me.

Tatra mountains, Slovakia? Can be sweltering sometimes but more usually pleasantly warm and obviously milder up in the mountains. Could combine with a city visit to Budapest which is lovely and you can take nice train journey to Eastern Slovakia.

Thank you for those. Are there any options not in Europe?

San Francisco? You could also include The Grand Canyon.

WaitingForSunnyDays · 13/02/2024 17:10

West coast of Canada? I've not been, but the temperatures don't look too high in August, so maybe Banff and train to Vancouver, and Vancouver Island. You might get some days which are hot though. Maybe even go by train from Vancouver to Seattle, which is something I've always wanted to do.

The Loire Valley
The Baltic Coast
The Norwegian Fjords
The west coast of Scotland
Wales.

What's your max temp OP. You first mention 'not blistering' which would cover a large chunk of Europe, but if you mean no higher than 20 degrees, for example, it's a different matter.

holidayer · 13/02/2024 18:36

Like around 25ish as a max?

I love these ideas and am googling

Last year we went to Kuala Lumpur and it was quite uncomfortable. A lot of places I was looking at were saying highs of 30-31

The Netherlands is also on my less hot holiday list - a stay on the west coast followed by some cities like Amsterdam, Ghent for waffles and Efteling theme park.

I went to Juneau in Alaska a few years ago and it's absolutely gorgeous. I went in early June and they had a very rare heatwave in the 80s with the top temp hitting 90°F (so around 26-32°C) but summer there is normally more 60-75°F (16-24°C approx).

I just stayed in Juneau and there was plenty for me to see in that time but you could look at other areas of Alaska or maybe nearby parts of Canada. It's a beautiful part of the world.

We were looking for this last summer, as one of our relatives cannot operate well above 25 degrees. We went to the alps in Switzerland, which had the benefit of a lake to swim in and good public transport. It was a bit on the warm side for them, but generally workable because it got cooler the higher you went. Expensive though.
It is a tricky thing to search for because 'cool' in holiday speak often does not relate to actual temperature!

EwwSprouts · 13/02/2024 19:14

Vancouver Island. Don't think small island off Vancouver. It's the size of the Netherlands.

VivaVivaa · 13/02/2024 19:17

Pacific Northwest. Oregon and Washington and British Colombia. Train between Portland, Seattle and Vancouver. I feel I comment this on every thread but it really was the trip of a lifetime. Unbelievable cities and unbelievable countryside. Was hot when we were there in Summer but it was an exception. Mid 20s is usually more normal.

Holidayaddict · 14/02/2024 07:22

We did San Francisco in August (not a fan of heat either). It was very cool weatherwise and plenty to see and do. We also spent a few days along the coast (Pacific Coast Highway).

EwwSprouts · 14/02/2024 08:37

August is not the best time for San Francisco. It can often be foggy. Conversely we went five years ago and the temp was an exceptional 40.

Canada fits your bill! The Rockies will be heaving in August though.

Vancouver- Vancouver Island- Cruise to Alaska is a fab itinerary that works for 2 weeks. Incredible scenery, loads to do.

Alternatively the East Coast- I was hugely pleasantly surprised by Montreal/Quebec and we then took a road trip out to the Bay of Fundy for whale watching, hiking etc.
