Cyprus passport advice

Hi. Hoping someone can help put my mind at ease!

I’m due to go on holiday to Cyprus at the end of May this year. One week leaving May 25th back 1st June.

Been reading that as well as three months left until expiry date the passport need to an issue date within the past 10 years.

My passport expires Sept 2025 but the issue date is Dec 2024. So obviously it’s had extra months added.

Will this be OK?

It will only be valid for 10 years from issue for Europe. Do you mean issue date was December 2014? So 9 yrs and 9 months from issue would be September 2025 so it will fine to travel on in Europe until then.

OMG - so many typos! Clearly trying to multitask and badly Blush

Yes - my passport expires Sept 2025, the issue date is Dec 2014.

So assuming it's only after Dec 2024 it would be a problem to travel for the 10 year issue date part?

you disregard the extra, so your expiry is really Dec 2024, then go back 3 months from your return date for Europe and six months for some other destinations

ItWorriesMeThisKindofThing · 09/02/2024 20:11

you are ok till around Sep 2024 for Europe

Ignore Sept 2025, that's extra time that is invalud since Brexit. Your passport expires 10 years from the date of issue - so Dec 2024. Then work back three months from when you return home - September 202, so you should be ok for June 2024.

You look at the issue date when leaving the UK so December 2014 - you can leave the UK up until December 2024 to travel in the EU (10 years from issue date)

When leaving Cyprus you need 3 months remaining on thre passport which is when you can go by the printed expiry date

The 2 requirements are separate factors so the 3 months remaining doesn't need to be deducted from the new 10 year expiry date and can be calculated from the actual expiry date on the passport.

North or South ?

Might be different, so worth checking with the relevant tourist board, or a tour operator.

Cyprus is not in the Schengen area, but it applies the Schengen passport validity rules. The UK government confirms that here: https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/cyprus/entry-requirements

The rules are:

  1. Your passport must be less than 10 years old on the day of entry.
  2. The expiration date must be 3 months after your intended day of exit.

You can use your extra months beyond 10 years to meet requirement (2) but — by definition — not to meet requirement (1). (Don't ask me why the rules are like this, doubtless there are some very subtle reasons, but that's how it works.)

So you will be absolutely fine for your trip in May. You have a very big margin and you won't be getting close to either limit. In fact you could even turn up in November 2024 (your passport would be 9 years and 11 months old) and stay for 3 months (you would be leaving 7 months before it expires).
