Where to eat in Rome with teens?

Hit me with your restaurant recommendations please for a February half term trip (so not al fresco!). Would like to do a combination of good pizza places and more traditional Italian restaurants - budget to mid range. Kids love food so don't need to cater for fussy eaters. We're staying between Trevi and Repubblica, but happy to travel for good food.

Restaurants in trastevere are lovely, really great area for eating out

Forgottenmyphone · 09/02/2024 05:44

Tonnarello was our favourite.

TiaSeeya · 09/02/2024 05:49

Also recommend Trastevere.

Honestly anywhere I don't think it's possible to have a bad meal in Italy. Enjoy and a gelato for me !🍦

Sonora25 · 09/02/2024 06:38

Anywhere!

Twiglet2353 · 09/02/2024 06:40

Another vote for Tonarello. Carbonara hasn't been the same for me since. Ohhh man

BlindurErBóklausMaður · 09/02/2024 06:49

You'll eat well, and cheaply, anywhere. Rule of thumb is really , if you aren't thinking "blimey this is cheap for such a nice meal" then you're in a tourist rip off joint. Avoid the restaurant lined street as you walk towards Trevi. There are your typical "are you hungry, come in" men outside waving menus at you and apart from the steak place (which is Tuscan not Roman, but incredible and always has queues) they're all pretty meh.

I agree with Trastevere, a bit out for you from where you're staying but you can get the metro from Repubblica. Cheap as chips and excellent food everywhere.

Look for little places that do the three main Roman pasta dishes (carbonara, amatriciana, Cacio e Pepe) and you won't go wrong. Arlu is my favourite near the Vatican walls, so a short walk from Trastevere.

All the gelato even in February
If you fancy something fun to do we did a tour of Rome on segways which was epic!

Go where you see plenty of Italians

Oh, it's possible alright. I had some of the worst pasta of my life in Italy. It was so salty they must have dumped an entire box of salt in the cooking water!

Alicay · 09/02/2024 10:11

My teens really enjoyed doing a food tour of Trastavere. Lots of recommendations on Trip Advisor.

tobyj · 09/02/2024 19:06

Thank you all! Sounds like Trastevere is the place to be.

Trastavere is a nice place but I disagree about Tonnarello, it was a (hugely busy) tourist trap with a very much mediocre food.

We were in Rome last summer, stayed in Monti. We ate twice in a tiny back street restaurant behind our hotel and it was so good, fairly cheap and great service. Much better than always recommended Tonnarello.

AsTheyPulledYouOutOfTheOxygenTent · 10/02/2024 18:34

Anywhere that doesn't have photos of the meals in the window and a menu translated into six languages should be fine. Trip Advisor and Google are reasonably trustworthy. Don't get hung up on going to the best place which might then be full - with teenagers just grab the nearest pizza/sandwich/pasta/icecream.

BeaRF75 · 10/02/2024 18:36

Rome is chock full of restaurants that teens will enjoy - no need to try to pick and choose. Just take a wander and go wherever takes your fancy.

mondaytosunday · 10/02/2024 18:37

Have to say one of our best meals was smack bang in the middle of a touristy area! But really, just walk about and go wherever takes your fancy.

Bargello · 10/02/2024 18:37

Brilliant! We are off to Rome for a week in June with three teens too. We are staying in the Prati area which is between the Vatican and the river, will be looking at all these recommendations.

@tobyj I always use Time Out. Always reliable. Lonely Planet good too.
